songs of protest
Folks if you have not listened to this CD, it is a must
Yes it is an oldie, but some of the songs in there, apply to right now
I especially like track one and track 15... and no my CD player does not give me the name of each.
It includes things like the Great Mandala and El Salvador
It is worth picking it up.

but they are some of the mroe esoteric, and thought provoking. I have the very CD in one of the slots in my Car's CD player.

| 6. There's A Lot Of Songs That I've Been Revisiting Lately |
|
Cat Stevens getting nabbed (I feel so much safer now) made me pull out my copy of Father & Son. Then there's Thunderclap Newman's Something In The Air, Jefferson Airplane's Volunteers...the lyrics sound as fresh today.
Crank on any war protest song from the 60's and be prepared to get chilled. I just heard PP&M's Cruel War...written about the Civil War, revised for Vietnam and now perfectly suited for Iraq.
Also, just heard Steve Goodman's "Ballad Of Penny Evans" about a 19 year old who has just died in Nam...powerful stuff.
Not sure about a specific PPM album of Protest songs, but I have a lot in my collection...and always sharing with friends.
Cheers!

I've listened to them for most of my life. And I have seen them in concert. Their message is timeless and their music just the best. Thanks.:-)

|
I'd use it to shatter my wife's Peter, Paul and Mary's Greatest Hits CD.
No, just kidding, I don't dislike them that much, but they are too syrupy-sweet for my taste.

|
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 08:24 AM by OneTwentyoFive
I'll take the fingers on the chalk board over that song any day,and of course our oldies station plays it quite a bit. On the flip side of things I've always liked their song "I dig Rock and Roll music",great song about 60's music and artists.
Anytime I hear the group Peter,Paul and Mary it reminds me of some of the last beatnik, dim lighting, coffee shop kind of groups era that they came out of. The Beatles hit the charts the next year in 64 and music changed forever.

| 13. Yeah, fall of '63, we were listening to |
|
the Kingston Trio and other folkies at parties, but fall of '64, we were listening more to "British Invasion" music and dressing like mods. Yet Hootenany was on TV in fall '65. (Were Freddy and the Dreamers on Hootenanny or was there another musical variety show which I've forgotten? Then came Simon & Garfunkel, then Donovan, and Sonny & Cher, all the hile that the Stones and the Kinks, the DC V, etc., were rocking, so it was mixed. We were eclectic. Or schizoid, take yer pick.
Coffee shops continued, too, though bongos were out. Cool, daddy-o. B-)

That's the show where you saw 'em do the Freddie. And then there was Shindig on ABC. On Shindig the chicks danced in cages and on Hullabaloo they pranced all over the place. That's how you could tell them apart. ;)

| 16. Very good -- I thought there was another show. |
|
The Freddie -- stupidest dance of all time? Did you know Leon Russell appeared on Hullabaloo? But didn't connect then. Remember that "Peyton Place" was THE hot TV show? My parents liked "Green Acres," but I thought it very declasse. I wasn't much of a television watcher, though, except for Hullaballoo and the Smothers Brothers Show. I was more likely to be in my room reading Jack Kerouac or Lawrence Ferlinghetti (or maybe my copy of "Fanny Hill" that I kept hidden.) ;-) Good memories!

| 11. LOL! Great reply! But I love the songs and the harmonies |
|
I just think that they're the best, and I've loved them since I was a kid. My mother went to one of their concerts in the '60s and I took my grandmother to one of their concerts in the '80s. But I can understand it if they get on your nerves. I really hate country music. Aren't they preferable?

| 12. How 'bout the Kingston Trio? |
|
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"
Damn, we need us some folkies today! Where is Baez? Dylan? Pete Seeger? Why no protest music in these times?
"What Have They Done to the Rain?"
On a lighter note, remember PP& M's 1964 hit "Skewball"?
"Oh, Skewball was a race horse, And I wish he were mine He never drank water He always drank wine."

| 15. Why no protest music? Perhaps you should ask Clear Channel |
|
or RIAA, which seem to control the distribution of what passes for music these days
