who thinks if Bush "wins" in '04 our military might stage a coup?

This just occurred to me this morning.

Our military is getting its ass kicked. It's looking really BAD right now. They're in the ultimate no-win situation, AND they're stuck there. They don't have any resources available to go anywhere else. They probably want the fuck out.

They probably are HATING George Bush right about now. Especially since he's all bellicose about N.Korea and Iran and whatever the hell else he feels like being bellicose about.

The problem being, of course, what follows (kind of like Iraq). What do you do next? Place a general in charge? Bring in the UN? Put the "real" winner of the election in power?

Am I just nuts? Will this post even survive?

I know I'm sort of bucking the trend, but I have a lot of faith in the resiliency of the American System. We've had lousy presidents before; many of them. We have President Bush, and as much as I hope he doesn't get a second term, we'll probably survive it if he does.

...a complete lack of understanding of the military. The image of the knuckle-dragging soldier who thirsts for war and bloodshed is a silly civilian caricature. The overwhelming majority of military people I have had the privilege of knowing are among the most reluctant to go to war in the whole population. Not only do they have the unique burden of being the ones who are exposed to the danger of getting killed, but also the burden of having to kill, which exacts an emotional toll that few are eager to embrace.

Didn't you listen to the generals before the war? They couldn't have telegraphed their apprehension about the Iraq war any louder. None of them wanted to initiate hostilities with Saddam.

If anything, I think it's more probable that if * loses the election, his hand-picked officers will support his voiding the election and declaring himself dictator. The front-line grunts won't be able to organize to oppose that - they'll all conveniently be out of the country fighting *'s trumped-up wars.

I wonder about your question myself. But even more, could the majority of the military bring themselves to vote for a Dem in 2004??? It would be a FIRST time, for many of them if they did.

As for a coup, I don't see how they could vote for GWB, and then stage a coup against him.

The military still is, at core, loyal to the Constitution, no matter who is president.

The way the military establishment deals with people or policys it dont like is to energize non-uniformed lobbying and political support combined with leaks and "bureaucratic veto.
