The Lying Game, Revisited (Setup for war with Iran)

We live in a recurring nightmare. That's the only conclusion one can draw from today's headlines, which, as we draw closer to a confrontation with Iran, bear an eerie resemblance to yesterday's breaking news. It seems like only yesterday that a Middle Eastern exile group – the Iraqi National Congress (INC) – was feeding the U.S. government "intelligence" that drew a fearsome portrait of Saddam Hussein's supposedly burgeoning nuclear arsenal. The Iraqi dictator was said to be plotting with Al Qaeda to knock off a few more American skyscrapers, and, at one point, George W. Bush even conjured visions of Iraqi drones flying over our airspace and raining death and destruction on American cities.

The startling announcement by lame-duck Secretary of State Colin Powell that Iran – contrary to its public declarations, and the spirit if not the letter of Tehran's recent preliminary agreement with the EU to temporarily halt the uranium enrichment process – is working on a nuclear missile delivery system has Washington in a frenzy of speculation, and, yes, shock. The latter is over Powell's extraordinary willingness to reveal information that was reportedly unvetted, and from a single source, and repeat it as fact...

1. Well, as the French say: Quel Surprise!

Did anybody seriously think we WEREN'T going to pre-emptively strike Iran, given its nuclear missile program (real or not) and the fact that they are part of the "Axis of Evil"? Masters of War are we! And everybody who voted for Bush will soon see what they have truly wrought. He knows the will of the people, and is getting ready to spend more of that political capital. I feel sorry for the Iranians who would rather not have this happen, but I'm sure there are thousands who will be welcoming us with flowers and happy faces. Just like in Iraq.

After all--as Orwell said, War is Peace. And Ignorance mostly certainly is Strength.

3. Of course not.

Most of us expected war with Iran if Bush got re-elected. We didn't manage to stop the Iraq invasion. How do we stop the replay?

4. I wasn't trying to be flip.

Hope I didn't come across that way. I'm just so frustrated with those who voted for Bush saying oh, no, there won't be another war. And oh, no, there will be no draft. How do we stop the replay is the 64 grand question at this point, and my guess is, we cannot. Somehow those who support this dictator think anything he says/does is fine with them and that he only speaks the truth. Seriously, when my daughter tries to tell her associates about his lies, their only response is, "It's the liberal media that's twisting Bush's words to mean something he didn't say."

If those who voted for him expected war with Iran, it must be what they want. It will now rain fire on the just and the unjust. And there seems to be nothing we can do to stop the conflagration.

I knew what you meant. And in my post, by "most of us," I meant Kerry supporters. At least half of Bush's supporters do not see this man for what he really is.

we need to keep reminding the media that they were complicit in propagating the lies about Iraq and warn them to be more skeptical now....

6. The Lying Game et al...

Given CP's spiel to the UN on Iraq's WMDs, it would seem his credibility now is not all that invulnerable. Moyer's on the PBS NOW program put it rather succinctly in that people only fall for the "Crying Wolf" line once and the 2nd time even if legitimate can oft times be viewed with disdain.

Stabenow and Levin will be smart enough to vote NO. I can only hope ALL the other Dems who are in need of such find a backbone before this hits the floors for votes.

9. You'd think they'd be able to come up with a new plot line

to rev it up though. This is so transparent and repetitive. Have we really become that lazy and stupid as a society, or do we just want to slake bloodlust in revenge? It's mind boggling, and ugly.
