Giambi Testified He Used Steroids

New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi injected himself with human growth hormone in 2003 and also used steroids for at least three seasons, according to his grand jury testimony reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The testimony given in December 2003 to the federal grand jury investigating BALCO contradicts Giambi's public proclamations that he never used performance-enhancing drugs.

Giambi described how he injected human growth hormone in his stomach, testosterone into his buttocks, rubbed an undetectable steroid knows as "the cream" on his body and placed drops of another, called "the clear," under his tongue, the Chronicle reported on its Web site Wednesday night.

Giambi testified that he obtained several different steroids from Barry Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, who is one of four men indicted by the grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. He said he got the human growth hormone from a gym in Las Vegas.

4. He has a pituitary tumor - may be related to steroid use

The Yankees spin the tumor saying there is no evidence that steroids or human growth hormone cause cancer. Once the tumor story broke, several articles cited research that suggests a link with excessive testosterone and tumor growth.

I don't know a thing about this field of science, but I know when Lyle Alzado died, he pleaded with the NFL to ban steroids and use him as evidence that steroids will cause cancer.

I hope Giambi will be okay. He seems to be a fine young man. With luck, he stopped abusing these drugs before massive damage was doen to his body.

As a player, it is clear he will never be the same. The fallout from teh tumor and the decline post-steroid and HGH have left him with reduced power and bat speed. The yankees will be paying almost $80 million to him over the next four years, but he will certainly not earn that money.

5. In my opinion...

he should be banned for life. I mean I'm sorry that he's sick, but he tainted the sport. He used performance enhancing drugs. That's worse than gambling on a game to me.

6. Banned for life?

I don't support banning athletes for life. I have no problem with a punishment, but given the circumstance baseball put in place, this is a bit much.

In this case, I think a suspension is in order. However, the problem with suspending him for a long term, is that baseball has accepted steroid use for many years. Though it was against the rules, baseball knew it was done and chose not to push for testing or to punish athletes that admitted use after their careers ended.

Since baseball sent a clear message to its athletes that steroids were no big deal, I think its a bit unfair to ban a player for life for this offense.
