Here at DU this weekend it has been noted that the CA GOV, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christy Todd Whitman Former NJ Gov called for the Republicans to move more toward the center. My question is: Why would they do that given the success they had in the last election cycles? It makes no sense. Arnold and Christy know this too. What Christy and Arnold are trying to accomplish is increase their statewide appeal- not change the Republican party. Both know that the GOP is not about to move left. Both are from Blue states where the mood is not too happy that Bush won. These states may want to increase Democratic strength in the next election cycle. Both are scared of being tied to Bush if things get sour. Arnold when he runs again in 06 will want CA moderates to forget his cozy Bush relationship. Whitman more than likely has her eye on a Senate Seat in NJ, a close relationship with Bush will noy go over there very well. (Rumors have been floating around that Corzin is thinking of running for Governor.) So the message to and from the Democrats should be don't buy this moderate crap. Both stood up for Bush at the convention. Both support him. Knocking off blue state Republicans should be the goal and should include Snowe, Collins and Chaffee as well. It is past time Dems reverse what Repugs did in the south..tie moderates to unpopular or ultra conservative leaders-pressure or persuade with incentives to switch parties.
