My friend in Florida called me in tears this morning over this bill. She's about to file for bankruptcy, after losing her home in the hurricane (but FEMA only paid $2,000 despite the fact that her mobile home was condemned because of toxic mold.) She still owes payments on the mobile home even though she can't live there anymore. She was hurt badly in a car accident right after the hurricane and lost her job because she couldn't work, so she has no income, except unemployment which is about to run out.
Now she can't find a new job, becuase they check her credit rating and see she's in debt due to huge medical bills. (She's an accountant, so financial problems are a big red flag.) The driver who hit her had minimal insurance and no assets.
She has metal pins in her arm from earlier surgery that were ripped loose in this accident, but she has no money for surgery to fix it. Her neck is hurt so badly that without regular chiropractic treatment, she goes into convulsions. She was already on financial thin ice after surviving breast cancer and being hurt in a previous accident.
"What's going to happen to me if I can't discharge the debts through bankruptcy?" she asked. "Will I wind up in a homeless shelter? Or do the Republicans plan to bring back workhouses for the poor?"
She is nearly 60, with no children or husband to help her.
This bankruptcy bill is terribly wrong and cruel. All, please call your Congressional reps and Senators. Cut and paste this post, if it will help.
