but selfishness isnt a very good political buzzword, so they call it conservatism and pretend they are being sensible.

...hate and detest the poor and middle class. The conservative movement accuses the the left of "hating America." The corollary, of course, is that the rich and right hate Americans.

I've never understood why anyone wants the State deciding who lives and who dies. Lock em up to protect society, and let God sort it all out.

| 10. but notice they dinnae trust government to 'lockem up' ? |

it's a weird contradiction: the same people who hate big gov and 'taxes' support the biggest government operations of all -war and harsh police/prisons/punishments!....the same who don't trust gov to use taxes wisely entrust same with life and death! BUT the contradiction isn't, really. the shifting moral standards of the righteous have always existed, and they have always been known about...they're called 'hypocrites' in the bible aka 'liars, devils etc'

Letter to Editor in local paper:
"Everyone benefits from a prison or jail. Only those with kids (and kids) benefit from schools. Why should everyone be taxed for something that does not benefit everyone?
You should have a tax on kids to pay for the schools. And if you can't afford 'em, don't have 'em or move to a location where the school is suitable for your child."

| 8. You've hit on the million dollar question..... |
|
This is an excellent topic for discussion.
Who can spend money better...you or the government.
Ah ha....the old Limbaugh line....
Now...historically we have seen some of the greatest projects put together from government programs. No sense in enumerating them here. The government CAN spend money wisely...especially when it BUILDS THINGS (duh).
If you assume that free enterprise and business would ultimately result in some of these unbelievably great projects...then perhaps you might have a point.
Point is...they really haven't. Yes, they have built buildings. Yes they have created wealth for investors. But the overall objective of profit making is not infrastructure and public good. Now witness colleges and education falling prey to business interests.
What's the answer. You have to have a responsible governing body that realizes that certain investments are necessary to further the public good. That DOES NOT mean wholesale SOCIALISM....and certainly...it doesn't mean COMMUNISM as most pukes might believe.
What's our problem....
We have become so exploited and trained to think that all we should do is work and give profits to the boss, that we have lost our way in terms of thinking what government could possibly do to help society.
Therefore....there isn't any real consensus on how to effect good social programs.
Only confusion. And distractions...ala abortion, gun control et al.
All we can do at this point is try to vote them out...then try and form the consensus on what the incremental positive steps we can make in society might be.
How about for starters....tougher CAFE standards?

| 9. because they do not see them as morally equivalent |
|
taxes are man-made and there is little (other than render unto Caesar stuff) to motivate their actions to do so from a moral center. they point to the actions employed by government to help folks as usurping those of private charity, good wholesome, life-enriching charity as Jesus would want it.
death is well, so permanent, and is actually sanctioned in the holy texts they draw upon for a moral code so yes, they weigh more the taking of a life as acceptable behavior by any political system. pro-death penalty advocates accept that the punishment for the blasphemy of such a moral totem is death itself.
the first value of human society is.......that we don't go killing each other.
it is not taxation.
