| Surprised I don't see more threads complaining about Gore TV... |
|
It seems like for the past year or however long it's been since that has been a rumor, people were talking about how great the Al Gore run cable channel would be and how it would be our savior and our answer to Fox news. I thought for sure once they announced that it wasn't going to be that at all, that there would be an abundance of threads expressing complaints or dissapointment. Personally I don't care since I didn't think it would make any difference whatsoever since it would be preaching to the choir. But still.

Sure I wish it was more of a democrat/liberal network (that's a dream) but it's his idea and his plan. I remember reading about this not long ago and he always said it was going to be "youth oriented." It's his plans and his money. You don't have to watch. I'm willing to give it a chance to see what it's like.

| 12. No, I think Gore should do and say what he wants.... |
|
...my issue is with people expecting any one man to be the savior of the democratic party or thinking that the solution to our woes lies in having a liberal answer to Fox, and thinking that Gore was going to ride in and rescue us all with his anti-Fox network. Air America is great and I"m a loyal listener. But people thinking it does anything other than rile up the already converted are deluded. And anyone thinking that the answer to our solutions lie with the Gore TV network or a "liberal fox" are equally deluded.
I'm glad that Gore is going with his heart and doing something is not political but could have political ramifications if done right. THAT is the way to go about things.
People on here complain all the time about our politicians and how they aren't going to get anywhere by imitating repubs. But then in the same breath they want our media and our everything else to imitate repubs and thing THAT is the solution to our problems.

| 3. You mean the "non political" comment? |
|
i saw a good post, saying that fox also claims to be nonpolitical.
seems to be just a useful cameoflage, for political media that wants to sneak into many minds under their radar.
pretend to be un slanted,
but really be slanted. MSM sure does a lot of that.
Not saying i endorse that subterfuge.. just reporting what they do .

| 7. I think it is silly to want them to come out and say "THIS IS A LIBERAL |
|
CHANNEL." Do you hear fox advertising itself as a Conservative channel? No way in hell. Only thing we can do is give Gore's channel a shot right?

Are you complaining that people aren't complaining?
Considering that it hasn't even launched yet, give it time. I'm sure people will complain as soon as they notice that it doesn't perfectly represent their views on every single issue.

see my other response above. I think liberals/dems who are looking for a savior who will rescue us on every issue, and then tearing down anyone who deviates slightly from what THEY want us to do.
If you've seen Cool Hand Luke, it's that effect.

The "that's it, X lost my vote 'cause he did Y" posts on DU drive me crazy.
No politician is perfect - while we can certainly work towards change and make our voices heard, we can't just write off our Democratic politicians for every little (or even big) thing they do.

| 10. And in order to launch the equivalent of a teleblog, Gore is |
|
actually destroying the closest thing we currently have to a real liberal channel, Newsworld International.
Yeah, I've been criticizing him about it ever since he bought the station. Why should I be happy to lose a station that gets most of its content from Canada and other foreign countries and has excellent in-depth reporting and cultural commentary? The ONLY station that didn't cheerlead for the U.S.-British forces during the Iraq invasion? The ONLY station that allowed thoughtful representatives of the protestors at the WTO conference in Quebec significant airtime to explain their views?
Gore is killing THAT to launch a "youth-oriented" station that will probably appeal only to video creators and their friends. I watched the videos on the website--all style, no substance.
Some have told me, "Oh, most people don't get NWI anyway." Well since NWI is the station that Gore bought, what makes you think that any more cable companies will carry it, especially if it really challenges the MSM?
But as I read the threads, most of what I see is comments from people who probably haven't read the descrption of the station. There's this underlying assumption that if Gore is involved, the station will be 1) liberal and 2) a counterpoint to Fox. Uh, read the description, folks.
What was he thinking? He could have bought NWI and augmented the Canadian and international content with liberal American commentators. He could have bought one of those damnable shopping channels or fundamentalist channels, of which there are dozens on the dial.
NOOO, he had to go and ruin one of the best channels available on cable, and there are no guarantees that anyone else will offer that content.
So, yes, I'll criticize Gore's acquisitoin of NWI all you want.
For one last time, people, it is NOT the counterpoint to Fox that you're all dreaming of.
