| Harry Reid and his attempted deal making with Frist |
|
Hear me out for a second.
When i first heard about the deal making he was attempting it really angered me, and then i kept thinking about and what i think he did was smart. I think he went in there to talk to Frist already knowing that Frist would say no and that would get out in the media, something like "Reid tries to compromise, Frist says no" and then i thought about how that will play out in the public, we've seen a few polls with numbers on the side of keeping the filibuster and i think when people realize Frist just said no way i think that senate republicans will lose even more support not only on this issue but on others because they will be perceived as just inflexible and petty. Thats my 2 cents, flame away.

He is a sane and intelligent man. Reid will hopefully shut the Senate down soon. There is no point in having the Senate operate when it is being run by these parasites.

Reid's point was to prove how extreme the Repukes really are. He knew they wouldn't accept any compromise.

|
If Frist has the votes, he obviously won't compromise.
If Frist doesn't have the votes, he is still better off not compromising. By taking this to a vote and losing, he might still maintain some support from the religious right, but he loses any chance for their support if he compromises.

| 9. excellent, Reid is one crafty man and the fact that he's |
|
pretty soft spoken helps his cause all the more. I remember watching him on the seante floor about 9 months or so ago reading from his book, he was there for over 8 hours.

I loved the 6th District compromise. Levin and Stabenow have holds on 3 nominees from Michigan in retaliation for Spencer Abraham's 3 year hold on two Clinton nominees who have the two longest nominations without ever getting a hearing. Levin (with Leahy's help) has offered a bipartisan compromise, which was essentially "we'll tell you to drop Henry Saad, you can keep McKeage and Griffin, and then we'll replace Saad with one of the Clinton appointees whose nominations were scuttled by Abraham and Hatch." In effect, Reid's compromise was to give Clinton a final judicial appointment, 4 years after he left office.
See post 6. i posted this from the Dkos comments.

for trying to find a middleground in such an awful scenario. Despite the dirt that continues to be kicked in our face, as a whole we realize that diplomacy, compromise and agreement has to be the order of the day to keep legislation moving and ensure the will of the people is being carried out. It amazes me that the Right is stooping so low and continues to be so divisive to assert that the filibuster abolition is to protect the interests of the spiritually inclined (read, Jesus Freaks) and because "no judge has ever been filibustered" at least according to the message on my machine from Focus on the Family (read, Jesus Freaks). As we come closer and closer to a theocracy, I have to ask the question when is enough enough? What is the breaking point before diplomacy fails?

I have confidence in Reid. I think the same thing with Jimmy Carter being on the election reform commission. Never hurts to hear exactly what the opposing arguments are, most probably you will find out their weakness as well.

|
Reid if Frist had taken the offer? He would would have given away what many consider the only victories the Dem's managed, in 4 years. I don't think it would be worth it, even if it did kill Frist's presidential ambitions - Like that smarmy, unctuous rat-faces bastard has a chance, Orrin Hatch has more charisma, and Hatch is more repellent than a pubic louse.
