Commissioner: Send Sex Offenders To Mexico

A county commissioner in Central Florida has offered a controversial proposal of sending the area's worst sex offenders out of the United States to Mexico, according to a Local 6 News report.

Phone calls have bombarded Marion County Commissioner Randy Harris' office after he voiced his idea of banishing American sex offenders, Local 6 News reported.

"The American prison system is not a deterrent to these serious crimes," Marion County Commissioner Randy Harris says.

"We can pay under a contractual agreement the cost in Mexico and again I'm sure it would be a huge savings to the American taxpayer," Harris said.

Does he think Mexican jails are so much worse than they'll give up their appetite for unwilling victims? Or does he simply want them out of sight and out of mind, pushed off on a relatively powerless third world country?

What a stupid jerk. No, prison isn't a deterrent. Deterrents don't work on compulsive behavior. You either remove the person with the compulsion from society or you figure out a way to remove the compulsion.

We'd be better served if the powers that be would fund research into this stuff and ways to remove the compulsion, either through surgery or through medication. We know that psychoanalysis doesn't work and neither does a prison sentence.
