Four possible mothers of the next great scientist or great statesman of the world. Four possible mothers of the next great president of our times. Dead. Snuffed out in the prime of their youth. Snuffed out by the lies of George Bush, Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the other criminals of this Administration. How do they explain it?

So, even if one of these women had survived and given birth to a giggling sociopath, he couldn't have been like Bush. However, you can argue that he (or she) could have turned into any other sort of tyrant.

This is why the "human potential" argument is pretty much pointless. It could go either way.

The fact is, these deaths are a tragedy regardless of who they may have birthed later on. A tragedy and a crime of epic proportions.

I do not oppose women in combat and I believe that women should be required to register for the draft as long as men are required to register.

However, I think that it is important to recognize that women do not have equal rights in this society or in the military. Women in the military still face some restrictions. For example, a service woman or a female dependent of a service person cannot receive an abortion at a military hospital.

Ironically, one of the reasons that the Equal Rights Amendment did not pass was that fear such an amendment would allow women to fight in combat positions.

That having been said, I agree that it's not a good idea to send women into combat with men, as we have seen thus far.

Are you arguing that these marines would still be alive if they were men? If so, please explain. So far, I have seen no evidence that women cannot handle combat as well as male soldiers. Indeed, rules excluding women from combat positions only denies them the same benefits as male soldiers. It does nothing to protect them from harm.

much more than genetics, and to rely too much on the physical DNA body
is to play in to the conservative view... and their pro-life irony.

Death does not care. For all the tears, the end is without passion or
regret. Brave warriors have fallen in every generation and gained
high births in another life... and the wheel of life turns and turns.
Some people are always enslaved, some are always at leasure, and all
die and are reborn. The way is off the wheel, not by dying, but by
meeting death *now* without dying. As the only fact in life, to
wait until too late to explore it is to miss such a gifted doorway to
knowledge.

The entire tyranny of greed, corporate wars and cynical twists on
sincerity wear so thin that i feel empty when presented with a few more
needless deaths. It is beyond sad, yet death is final and for those
departed, not regrettable. It was their choice to be there, and
we honour the dead by taking down bush and stretching his scrawny neck
from teh gallows... anything else is a disservice to the honour of
this great nation.

It will all come soon enough.. and in the mean time, many will die.

Why is it that when a young woman is killed, people mourn what they won't be giving birth to rather than the potential these women themselves had?

of the post. It is a facetious attempt to draw a comparison between the right-wing argument on abortion and the insanity of this war that is based on lies and that they are supporting at the same time... It is a very incongruous proposition, I will admit.

But tonight I'm not in the mood to go there. It's tragic for every soldier and innocent Iraqi who has died in this war.

My mood is because I just read the profile of one of the dead female Marines. She was the mother of an 18 Year old son - and I hope he does not become Bush cannon fodder in honor of his mother. She's only 10 years younger than me - 42. She was a cook - but they put her in a truck to do guard duty cause they needed her to frisk Iraqi women. She was on her third friggin' tour - hadn't she already done her duty? Where are the Iraqi women troops to do this duty?

A Naval Reservist from Centralia, Regina Clark, was among those killed in a bloody attack June 23 in Iraq.

Her mother, Melitta Fountain, said the military was her daughter's passion. Petty Officer 1st Class Clark worked as a mess cook in the Navy, serving three tours of duty.

"I really didn't want her to go this time," said Fountain, "I figured once was enough."

Clark, 42, and her mother spoke to each other Thursday, they talked about getting care packages in the mail. But just hours after their conversation, Clark was killed by a suicide car bomber.

Here's a male soldier who left behind two kids and a pregnant wife. From Iraq Coalition Casualities.

Sgt. Terrance Lee knew there was a chance he would never return from Iraq, but the young soldier put his country above his own life, and left behind a pregnant wife and two young sons. Lee, 25, of Moss Point was killed in action on June 11.

And when they talk about missing in this Marine car bombing case it means there is not much of a body left. Imagine being a parent, spouse or child and knowing that. My mom kept that news to herself about her brother who died in a WWII bomber training accident. She didn't want her parents to know the Army Air Corp had sent back basically an empty coffin.
