while I hope we keep California (and keep Davis) I don't think losing the recall will necessarily mean California goes Bush. Look at the polls if nationally Bush is in the 40's then in California he must be worse off than that--it is overall a more liberal state than many.

You're right despite GOP governors in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York in 2000--Al Gore won three of his highest margins in those states. Despite a Dem governor in SC and Ga--Bush won landslides.

5. You're missing something

State governors can raise a ton of money. If Arnold Schwarzenegger gets elected governor, he'll be able to raise tens of millions of dollars for Bush and the RNC. We've seen similar things happen in New York -- we have a (fairly) moderate Republican governor and a downright liberal Republican mayor of NYC, but they both raise tons of money for more conseravtive Republicans. And frankly, the Democratic Party in New York has suffered as a result of being shut out of these choice executive slots for the past dozen years. True, having Gray Davis as governor of California hasn't exectly helped Democrats -- but Democrats should always jump at the opportunity to lead, and if Arnold becomes governor of California, the Democrats won't be able to lead -- they'll only be able to obstruct. Either that or sit around hoping Arnold fails.
