I was blown away a couple of weeks ago when an old neighbor stopped by my house why I was barbecuing. He had lived a couple doors down and moved away about 5 years ago. I didn't know him very well but always said "hello" and waved when I passed his house. Anyway, he was back in the neighborhood visiting another neighbor when he saw me barbecuing, so he came over and we chatted. This is what he said:

1) He is thankful Bush is in the White House because "he is so moral." I thought he was joking so I laughed, but stopped when I saw he was not kidding. He invoked "God" and "pray" a couple of times during our conversation. I had heard about people like this but didn't actually speak with one until this time.

2) He didn't think Gore or Kerry would have been good for the country. He thought Kerry was a waffler; "He just couldn't decide on a position."

3) WMDs. I asked him what happened to this, and he said Saddam deceived us and used the international community to jerk us around. He never did say if he thought there were any.

4) 9/11. I asked him about Bush's actions on that day. He said the US did the best it could with what it had then, but now something like that would not happen again ("9/11 Commission" recommendations). I asked him why Bush didn't do anything when informed by Andy Card that the nation was under attack. He said his generals and other top officials were on it. I said how did he know that since he didn't say anything to Card; there was no communication. He said that whatever happens, the top guy is responsible and Bush had to shoulder a lot of responsibility.

We went back and forth a few more times before he had to go. I kept my cool but am glad he's no longer living in the neighborhood.
