I missed most of Wolf's interview with Bill, except I heard his quick, and I think appropriate, answer when Wolf asked him if going into Iraq had been a mistake: he said Wolf was trying to get him to make news, and he was trying to educate people. (There is another GD thread on this exchange.) Much as we would have liked to hear different words, Clinton is a member of the former Presidents Club -- and much as we would like the troops home, they are there, in harm's way, at this moment.
What surprised me was the tone of the conversation following the interview, among Wolf, Candy Crowley, John King, and Jeff Greenfield. Folks, something has changed. There were no snide remarks, no rancor, no mention of scandal, as both Bill and Hillary were discussed. I know many on this board are not big fans of either Clinton, but if the demonization the Right has heaped on the Clintons for years is beginning to be neutralized it is a good thing for our side.
Wolf gave Jeff Greenfield the last say, and he took the opportunity to ask a question that, oddly, someone I shared dinner with last night asked at the table: If a Presidential election were held today between Bush and former President Clinton, who would win? This is a question, I think, fraught with meaning -- and part of that meaning is one man's inability to use the English language, and one man's mastery of it.
