Anti-War Activists Are Frauds

I am sickened by the images of T-shirt clad anti-war activists and public opinion polls, which suggest that half of all Americans disapprove of our actions in Iraq. In addition to the unpatriotic, too many Americans have no sense of history. Will we lose another war in the streets of American cities?

The phrase uttered over and over by the leftists: "I support our troops, but I hate the war," is complete nonsense. It is impossible to publicly deride the policy of war, while still somehow helping to maintain military morale. Such behavior only serves to lower resolve amongst our troops, encourages our enemy, and ultimately weakens the war effort.

The motivating factor behind this so-called 'peace movement' is not noble, nor does it have anything to do with peace. Their main objective is not the safety of our troops, but to undermine the Bush presidency.

Where were these people when Bill Clinton was bombing the Serbian people? Why were there no nationwide candle light vigils held after Clinton blew up an African aspirin factory? During his two terms, Clinton actually exhausted the nation's supply of cruise missiles, invaded Haiti, killed civilians in Serbia, turned a humanitarian mission in Somalia into a military operation--without ever seeking approval from Congress. Clinton bombed, invaded, occupied, and regularly activated National Guard units--never hearing any measurable amount of criticism.

7. Zero-sum thinking.

They can't assimilate the notion of "no-win" ... and persist in the delusion that if somebody else loses, they "win."

This is the moral failing of the right. When zero-sum thinking takes hold, the means/end confusion impels them to direct their efforts not at actually "winning" but at causing the 'opponent' to lose. Herein lies the very real truth of "the ends don't justify the means." Hell, they don't even comprehend the terminolgy I've used in this post!

... the combination of zero-sum thinking and a teleological ethic would lead one to act as though causing another to "lose" would be beneficial to one's self. It's a good "sanity check" for me to get the feedback.

It's more philosophically satisfying to me to see that such behavior would be the result of such common world views than that the behavior was simply malicious. It's too easy to come to a dead-end when thinking it's malicious -- i.e. where do we go but to the conclusion that the response must be punishment or mental health care -- and I don't like dead-end thinking. ("Conclusions" are often the booby prize - excuses to stop thinking. I sometimes envision a Skinner Box where the dead-ends are labeled "conclusion.")

By seeing such behavior as the collision of two fairly common world views, I'm afforded the opportunity of considering more productive approaches to understanding, unravelling, and dealing with such behavior - even if only in an interpersonal context.

These are the sales campaigns that have worked in the past, and so they trot them out again and again. They don't care about facts or logic or coherent arguments- it's all just ideology and belief. They "sell" their position like a used car salesman sells a beat-up old clunker. It doesn't matter to them if they use lies, distortions, and half-truths... none of that matters. It's the sale that's important.

During those Clinton years of apparently constant war, where was Mr. Gibson?

Was he actively criticizing those who criticized the president then, people like Tom Delay who said, "You can support the troops and not the president".

Somehow, based on his criticisms of Clinton here, I doubt it. Which kind of makes him a hypocrite of the highest order.

And I don't get this statement,""I support our troops, but I hate the war," is complete nonsense." If that is complete nonsense then the "sense" statement would be,"I support our troops, and I love the war," (sense being the opposite of nonsense;love being the opposite of hate).

Even the President is not dumb enough to say he loves the war. He has said it is necessary, which I do not believe, but he has never said it is a war to love (although when they started it I think they fell in love with the idea). What a poor choice of words this person used to make his case.
