| NO: Reagan's shining city on the hill? |
|
The images coming from New Orleans are disturbing, and show a society that disenfranchises its poor, and no longer invests in its own infrastructure. Yet the new, smaller gov't was always championed by republicans as one which would make for 'trickle down' wealth, with smaller taxes creating so much wealth that gov't services would be plentiful. To wit: Reagan's shining city on the hill. I think Katrina has shown us the logical result of republican policies.

| 1. The smaller government excuse used by the Repugs was always a farce. |

The same with labeling Democrats as the big spenders. Talking points they only agreed with when they had less power.
After 9/11 how many new positions and sections of Gov't did Bush create? And all you have to do is look at the last transportaion bill to see who really enjoys the pork..

They did lie about smaller gov't (in that they've bloated the defense budget to such a degree), but they have lived up to their smaller gov't promises with regard to infrastructure spending. While pork continues to be spent for political reasons, precious little is being spent on rail infrastructure, interstate highways, bridges, municipal rapid transit, etc. This is the first year that the security-crazed Bush Admin has spent ANY $$ trying to secure the Ports of Los Angeles (2nd largest in the world), and they only coughed up a couple million. Given our new awareness of the collective importance of the Gulf Coast Ports, what would happen to the US economy if something now happened to Ports of LA?
Picture the resulting chaos, and then flash back to Reagan's hokey but (I thought) heartfelt 'city on the hill' analogy. I think this is something the dems could build on.

Hmmmm. . . the author really does not develop why (despite Katrina) we're still the shining city on the hill . . guess I'll have to take his word for it. To me, however that overused metaphor denotes peace, harmony, everything functioning perfectly, where justice rules.
