I just so happen to be reading that book on the side while studying econ at UW Madison and the point was not about black babies. The point was that babies who would normally be born into poverty and dysfunctional families that would produce people more likely to committ crimes were being aborted and hadn't been before. came out. Several coworkers had a visceral, negative reaction to the authors' assertion. Even tho the authors did disavow any racist implication, it was felt by many of us in the prochoice movement that this argument was NOT good for our cause.

Personally, I have stayed away from the argument that legal, safe abortion prevents unwanted kids from growing up to be a societal problem because the prolifers jump all over you and you spend a lot of time on the defensive. First of all, this statement brings out into the open the right-wing agenda. With each statement they make, it's becoming clearer that these people are racists. If I was a black person, I would be very angry right now (Clarence Thomas, are you there)?

Second of all, "crime" seems to be a relative term, and it depends on who you know, what color your skin is, and how much money you make as to whether you have committed a crime or not.

Limbaugh illegally purchased massive amounts of a controlled substance; isn't that a crime?

DeLay has been indicted on conspiracy and money laundering charges; isn't that a crime?

George Bush lied to Congress and the American people about Iraq and WMDs, thereby initiating a deadly, disastrous war; isn't that a crime?

Frist committed insider trading; isn't that a crime?

Karl Rove leaked the name to the press of a covert CIA agent; isn't that a crime?

The answer to all of the above is yes, they are all crimes, but the difference is that not one of the above (and countless other "white-collar" criminals) have been made to account for their crimes. Yet these crimes hurt all of us. All of us will be getting less money in our mutual fund, IRA and 401K accounts, our politicians are more accountable to the big-money corporations than to each individual citizen (which is why the bankruptcy bill was recently passed), we are less secure in the "war on terror", thousands of innocent American soldiers and Iraqi people are dead or maimed, billions of tax dollars have been diverted to the Iraqi war and to large, connected corporations and not to needed programs and services here at home, our National Guard members are off fighting halfway around the world instead of helping out locally when disaster strikes, and our democracy is that much more insecure with each infraction.

So shut up about crime, Bill Bennett. You're a racist, elitist moron.
