Just a quick count: How many Katrina/Rita Evacuees are in your county?

I only ask because very few people know how many evacuees are in transition in the place where I live.

It's in the several hundred range and when I tell people this they are usually shocked.

Several hundred thousand people have been displaced and most Americans are unaware of the numbers that have relocated in their own communities.

Any community that's recieved a good number of displaced persons should have at least one agency that's keeping track.

FEMA will have a list, this is by "Case" basis which is 1 to ? persons, that can ussually be multiplied by 2 to 2.5 for a estimate of the total number of evacuees.

Your local United Way or Red Cross should be involved in this if you'd like to see how many people need your help.

The holidays are approaching, Red Cross hotel aid is running out, and people are going to be experiancing some real emotional pain.

I live in Stone County, MS, in the "panhandle," one county north of the coast. The motels are full, so are the campgrounds, and everyone with a motor home has rented it out. And yes, I do care.

various relief agencies, so I am getting an awful lot of "up close and personal" accounts.

We have about 300 in a Church camp on the outskirts of town. They are housed in little 2 bedroom cottages and the camp has a central dining hall where local people come to cook each day. The local women/men are expressing exhaustion and are ready for the evacuees to begin cooking for themselves (the town is providing the food). The camp is really quite comfortable, much better than a gymanasium or convention center. Families have some privacy and they have received so many donations that some local residents are getting resentful. This is a very poor area of Louisiana so no one has much, but we have shared.
There are 20-30 families who have been provided with a house or mobile home by churches. I have to say that although I don't go to religious services, they have come through around here.
We had a murder last weekend. A 16 year old in a close city killed a man at an ATM. He (the killer) was an evacuee and suddenly we are getting all kinds of stories about how many of the people who are applying for aid are actually not from N'awlins.

Our town only has 2000 people so there is no Red Cross to contact, specially not on a FRODAY night! Ha-ha
