| My baby brother turns 18 today. |
|
On what should be nothing but a happy, wonderful day, all I can think about is that he has reached draft age. :(
My parents have dreaded this milestone deep down too for the same reasons. My brother is AWESOME, by the way - smart, political (man was he pissed he couldn't vote last November) and a new college student.
Does anyone have any advice I can pass on to him to start cataloging CO status before he registers for the draft? He is Catholic and anti-war across the board for religious reasons, his political feelings notwithstanding.
Thanks. *sniff* My baby! (I was 14 when he was born)

| 1. Happy B-Day to your bro! |

I rec'd that he create a paper trail demonstrating his CO status- eg, a letter written by someone from your community that knows of his beliefs, a teacher or church leader. Also, documentation of his participation in any anti war rallies or events. etc.

| 3. Don't let the threat of dragon's keep you from enjoying the day. |

And his birthday may get pegged as the historic first Fitzmas!
When I was twelve, my brother got his draft notice during Vietnam. Six years later the SSA announced they would reach past my number in the birthday based draft lottery. Fortunately months before my four year younger brother would have been drafted it ended. So, I appreciate how the shadow of the draft can hang over you.
But, I really don't believe there is sufficient political support for conscription. 2/3 of the country thinks Bush's military policy is wrong. Imagine what that would be if there was a rebellion against the draft. And believe me, there would be a rebellion.
