85. That's true for a lot of them, I think -

especially those who belong to certain churches. The one I was forced to attend as a child teaches that Satan is working overtime to keep people from believing it, hardening their hearts and stuff, so I got the idea that fighting against it proves it's true. The more people are doing it, the truer it must be. I applied that principle, subconsciously, to a lot of things that seemed sort of right somehow and yet glaringly wrong at the same time. And I continued to do it for decades after I blew off this church, until I was nearly ruined by a sociopathic con man who spewed a lot of B.S. about right and wrong and stuff that sounded like what I'd been taught as a child and realized I was still doing it.

It isn't even about the religious teachings, necessarily. Spewing B.S. that agrees with what your parents taught you is powerfully persuasive, especially if they also failed to model critical thinking.

Religion aside, Bush spews all kinds of crap that agrees with wingnutty stuff that most American kids were led to believe until about, oh, 1975 - and still are to some degree. My mom sucks it up like Hoover, and so did my dad. Even my brother, who hates the church we belonged to with a purple passion, seems to need to justify his dislike of Bush.

Ironically, our parents also taught us about words and actions. Unfortunately, that only applies to "bad" people who don't say certain things.

(Scrubbing. Erasing.) Yep. It seems high school students have learned 1,800 or so on sight by the time they graduate, and another 2,000 is regarded as 'highly educated.' Understanding the primitives seems to be the key to expanded kanji literacy. (I remember my amazement, as a child of a culture with a phonetic alphabet, in learning that multiple national cultures have a somewhat common written language but widely varying spoken languages. before graduating high school are called "kan-yo kanji". Nearly all of them are composed of "radicals" which show the basic meaning of the character. It takes a while to get used to them, but if you've got motivation to study the language, they can be mastered. :hi:
