| Are we all going to do the democrat thing for thanksgiving |
|
by that I mean getting railroading by our right wing relatives. We allow them to shoot their mouths off and we sit and quietly stew but don't say anything because we want to keep the peace. They aren't interested in keeping the peace and by staying silent we reinforce their right to bully us. Sounds like what our elected officials do that makes me so damn mad. Many of our representatives are getting their acts together, we need to also.
This year at the very least, call the relatives today and set up ground rules - if they keep their mouths shut about politics you will but if they open the door your coming in.

I'm not sure I'd do it in an abrasive way; just an understanding that you aren't going to talk about certain things. Unless you have the sort of relatives you can talk politics with without getting all tense and upset. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

so there can't be a "democrat thing" and I'm glad of it but we get portrayed as sitting quietly and taking all the crap because most of us are too polite to give it back. Much of it has to do with what the media chooses to put on TV. I know Dave Obey doesn't sit and take anything. I just wanted to stir the pot a little and get people thinking.

I've had the talk with the RWers in my family that if they want to talk politics, I will talk politics, but they won't like it and it won't be a comfortable dinner. I feel as though if they can't respect me enough to not spew their opinions, then all bets are off. :)

| 17. Talking about politics at dinner |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 10:20 AM by TallahasseeGrannie
is considered very poor manners, regardless of your views. And manners exist in order to keep peace.
Whomever is hosting your dinner has gone to a lot of expense (having just spent 400 dollars at the grocery store I know this) and a whole LOT of work, from shopping to setting the table to making those pies to getting up early to cook the bird, to finding tofu turkeys for the vegans..it ain't easy.
While at someone's table you honor them by exhibiting good manners. This is why we don't kill each other. Manners. We used to handle these things with duels, but nobody has those pistols or swords around anymore, so that's out.
Thanksgiving dinner is NOT the time to convince people they are wrong in their political views. And if they start talking politics, just say sweetly "Otto, you fucking idiot, shut your pie hole." No...no... maybe not. Just say "Otto, let's not ruin Grannie's work and trouble talking about politics. Family is more important. Now, pass the stuffing!"
Just a suggestion, but you really should LISTEN TO GRANNIE!

and asking HER to put her foot down. At my table, I do it and people listen. I do it ever so nicely, however.
Now, if the hostess is a mouthy wingnut you're screwed. I think I'd give serious thought to eating at that table, then.

the fact that I don't HAVE any right-wingers in my family that we even associate with. Not to make you all jealous, but my whole family (except for one brain-damaged uncle who we don't socialize with) is liberal and we'll all be laughing around the table at the the moronic right-wingers as we always do when we get together.
The rest of you have my sympathy. I hope you get through to some of your mentally challenged kin.

So the only argument will be should the Cowboys use Julius Jones more or air it out against Denver, I think you have to establish a good ground game to open up the downfield pass, she thinks it can be done just as well with passes in the flats and flares out of the backfield. We might quarrel a bit over which characters should or should not have been included in the parade, she's more for the traditional balloons, I like to see newer characters added to reflect additions to the American culture.

When I was in college my neighbor was a FSU alum and from West Palm, we went to the Orange Bowl where they won the national championship over Nebraska, had a great time with the FSU fans.
I live in Dallas and am from Louisiana so LSU and the Longhorns to an extent for us, leaves us pretty indifferent toward FSU and Florida, no big rivalries. But we almost moved to Ft. Lauderdale and are still looking at trying to get to Miami, so if we get there looks like we'll have to learn how to sit on our hands for a game at a time of Hurricane football.

That was universal hatred in the SEC. Yet when his trip to the NFL was up, man these same fans were burning up the internet message boards wanting him to come to their school. And he did make it so easy, and you know what? I think he loved it, in fact I know he did!

Most of her people voted for Bush.
But I've built a nice little fifth column of some of her relatives, and her family set the ground rules.
"Do not discuss politics with Chipper, unless you know what you are talking about."
Some of her family have said, "if he's there we aren't" Her mom's response. "We'll miss you this year." ;)
Calm, cool, confident. We are. They aren't.

foodie friends, too, serious cooks. Yum!
Screw the sitting around with people you don't really like, don't have anything in common with, and always end up fighting with. I'm spending my holiday with people of my own choice.
Oh, and by the way, I'd call that the "doormat thing", not the "democrat(ic) thing". Democrats, real Democrats, are NOT interchangeable with doormats!
Funny thing, though - my husband almost refused to go to my niece's wedding with me this summer, because he'd had one too many run-ins with some of my mouthier RW relatives. Well, this summer was a little different - my brother-in-law, the 30-year DEA agent, had totally shut up, because the outing of a covert agent was WAY over the line for him (and he does think the whole * cabal is dirty on that). My cousin and her wingnut chickenhawk husband had both totally turned their coats, too, because their grandson was being sent back to Iraq for his second tour. My one braindead wingnut sister kept her big mouth shut too - because one of her sons was also going back for his second tour of duty, leaving behind his newborn daughter.
Funny how actually having to come face-to-face with the consequences of their evil bullshit changed people's attitudes...
but I'd still rather party with my Seattle-liberal-foodie-pervert friends!
