I just saw a touching montage on Fox's Hannity & Colmes.

It was soldiers on location in Iraq and Afghanistan, getting a chance to stand in front of the camera, and wish Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to their families at home.

All of them appeared to be somewhere between 18 and 30. Some addressed their families: spouses, kids, and some who had newborn babies. Some addressed their buddies back at home. Some gave a shout out to their favorite sports teams.


I was touched. Young, earnest, hardworking people of diverse backgrounds and races, investing in the American dream via the military. I felt a friendship and gratitude and empathy for each and every one.


Then Sean Hannity came on, with that squinty smile stretched up one side of his face, saying "Thank god for these heroes protecting our rights and liberties."


I jumped up and pointed at his face and cried, "Liar! Bastard! Traitor!" over and over, shuffling the order according to the passion of the nanosecond.


Because here's the truth: the sacrifice of those soldiers is real. The story that it's to protect us is a lie.


It's as simple as that.

It's all a part of a concerted effort, they made Iraq seem like a threat, they tied it into the war on terror when in reality one has nothing to do with the other, then they inflated the magnitude of the war. Brave men and women fight for this country, we know. In World War 2 they were fighting for our rights and liberties, now our military is there for other reasons.

My family is starting to look at me weird when I start screaming at the tv. I don't know why. After five years, you'd think they would expect it ... although one day, while I was on the phone, I heard my 18 year old son shouting at the tv ... I came into the room to have him say "I did it for you Mom. You were busy".

I didn't see the segment that you are referring to, but I agree with the point of your post just the same.

They LIED to them and they LIED to us.

I hope they can all come home whole and tell their stories to set the story straight.

6. Well the military's purpose is to protect our rights!

However, fighting a war in Iraq is not protecting our rights.

So technically (as much as I hate to say it)Hannity was right (although he isn't right for the reasons he thinks he is) the soldiers are in the business of protecting our country. They have just been put into a situation where they aren't able to do the job they were hired for.

well. And the sacrifice can be great.

And: the mission is chosen for them. By the people we elect. And they hold a sacred trust: that their missions will be chosen wisely, to protect the USA, its people, and its constitutional democracy.


But when the "elected" leaders choose unwisely, that trust is broken.

8. I saw a few of those clips myself as I channel-surfed, is it just me,

or was anyone else shocked that Hannity didn't attack soldiers for saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". How dare those soldiers attack Christmas.

12. Why Do You Watch That Faux News Anyway?

Honestly, I have removed that station from my remotes so that I don't even surf past it anymore. It would get me so fucking mad--like you were--that I just cannot watch those people and their snide little digs and slams at Dems and liberals while they defended Bush and Repubs without exception.

At one time I had myself convinced that I needed to watch that stuff to see what they were doing and how bad the slant was. But I had to free myself from it. It is discouraging to know that there are so many loyal followers of that stuff who do not apply any kind of critical thinking to what they see--just drinking up all that Kool-Aid without a care in the world.
