The key word: "PROMOTE". As in promote to people who might buy the product to get quality liberal talk programming, not promote to the very small population of XM-AAR listeners who have already been sold on the product.

XM should be proud of their AAR deal. They should want to shout it from the proverbial rooftops. And yet, I, as a non-XM subscriber, don't see it. I don't see it on their web site. I don't see Al hanging with Ellen, Derek, and Snoop on the TV ads. Yes, I know there was an obscure little press release that almost nobody saw when all this XM-AAR shit went down. But really, what has XM done to promote their exclusivity with AAR? Hell, how hard would it have been to buy ad space on DU and other progressive web sites where it would have been beneficial on more than one level?

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe there is a place in XM's advertising that actively promotes the AAR deal to people considering buying the product. Maybe I just haven't seen it. But I know you're involved with all of XM's movements, so if you know of a place where XM promotes AAR to people who might buy XM, please tell me.

(And while you're at it, feel free to tell us about the latest, greatest deal to buy XM. No, seriously. I've seen your posts and I know some folks around here, who don't feel burned, really do appreciate it. And with Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, National Falafel Day, et cetera coming up, I'm sure there are a few last minute shoppers here who would like to help a real liberal in need, or a person who needs to hear a real liberal. The point? Of course, XM should try to promote AAR on AAR's web site as it is in XM's interest. That's the bare minimum. But if AAR gets a flat, non-ratings-based fee from XM, this may not be in AAR's long term interest. AAR should be more aggressively promoting outlets that would drive up ratings and thus ad dollars, not just a banner that links to a page that pushes XM at the top of it. Perhaps a pop-up on mouse rollover of that banner that gives a state-by-state listing would be better, with links to the stations as well. Of course, this would require more management skills that are not currently present at AAR.

AAR is still the little kid on the talk radio block that everyone can shove around. AAR, with some exceptions, is a lot like right-wing radio in that it also avoids much in-depth discussion of issues, or resorts to mind-numbing repetition of mantra. In North Texas, we don't have an outlet for Pacifica, although I do listen to it on the Internet. I also have Sirius, which although losing AAR, does have news sources that I do appreciate, including BBC, CBC, NPR, PRI and World Radio Network. I guess, I'm not scared to listening to a fairly balanced broadcast (I'm not implying others are). I am just not a fan of rah-rah talk radio coming from either side.

I always assumed it was meant to be a humorous, pre-emptive strike at those on the right, who were doubtless poised to launch that exact accusation at AAR. The Advertising 101 axiom: Say Good, Say Bad, Just Say. For most some it may be offensive, for others it may be cute and for a certain number it will sell.

The fact there's a reaction to this ad has done what it was intended to do. I don't listen to XM, thus I've never heard this commercial. Now I'm aware of it...and curious to hear what it sounds like so I can determine if it's as offensive as others claim. Again, the design of the ad...to get ears to listen is accomplish. (Actually, I'm not gonna listen, cause I don't care about XM or in subscribing...just having some fun here).

I've seen AAR stations that like to tweak wingnuts on their billboards and promotional advertising...one I saw in LA said "For people who can stand the truth". I found that great...but I could imagine a wingnut fuming if he saw that thing. 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other.

AAR is an opinion and personality network. It works hard to be as accurate and factual as possible, but the bottom line is the shows are red meat for us who have little else on the radio dial to listen to. Can AAR present opinions that appear to be "lies or distortions"...sure...it depends on the ears that listen. Viva La Difference. Aren't we fighting for diversity of opinion...even the wingnuts? We just don't want them to have any real power...just their little soap boxes to brood in.

thinks this ad is of recent vintage, is because it did seem to disappear for awhile. I noticed it's reappearance a couple of weeks ago. Brought back memories of summer before last, when I started listening to Liz and Rachel in the morning on my way in to work.
