| is Laura Bush off limits when it comes to comedy ? |
|
i admit i don't really watch the late night comedy shows. but i do hear the jokes, especially political ones repeated. it seems to me they don't hold back when it comes to someone like Hillary, Teresa and most other Dem/liberal women.
but i don't think they ever made a joke about Laura. this even goes for ones obviously Dem like Jon Stewart.
why do you think this is ? i know the media whore part of it, but why do people like Letterman and Stewart who don't care much for Bush hold back when it comes to Laura Bush ?

| 1. Laura has preferred a low profile, so I think they cut her some slack |
|
It's a right wing thing to attack women and children, so i doubt that "our" political humorists would stoop as low as republicans do..

remember all the jokes about Kerry and the rich wives.even if it was aimed more at Kerry they still brought Teresa into it.
but i don't see them using Laura even in that way.
also i'm also talking about people like Letterman and Stewart who don't like Bush.

| 6. In order to be in a joke or bit, you have to interest someone -- |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 04:26 AM by sfexpat2000
either the writer or, potentially, the audience.
Laura just doesn't interest that many people. She could. We've used her but in a limited way.
And, it's not at all personal. If we sat down and said, "Let's nail that Stepford wife today!" the actual comedy, the funny, dies.

Laura has deliberately portrayed herself as the dutiful wife, content to walk in the shadow of "her man".. There's not much humorous about her..

her own events.
i understand it may be different with Hillary once she decided to run for Senate. but even before that we saw a lot of crap.
and what did Teresa do to put herself out there any more than Laura ? as i said Laura campaigned and gave speeches just as Teresa did.

waggles her crooky fingered hands, and disappears into the background. Hillary got a high profile (thanks to BC) right off the bat, and since the repubes were already stalking the Clintons, she was "fair game".. (see also V. Plame)..
Humiliating and criticizing women and children of elected officials is a republican thing to do. also. teresa has been a well-known philanthorpist for decades and was a very public figure already..she has also been waging a "war" with Mellon-scaife for a while now..

I haven't seen a lot of Laura Bush jokes, but I do remember that speech she gave a few months back (can't remember where) in which she claimed that George tried to "milk a horse".
The Daily Show had some fun with that. However, that joke wrote itself. I also think it's difficult for comedians to come up with Laura Bush jokes...afterall, why would you waste good material on her when the politicians in the Republican party keep the comedians busy by supplying them with an ample amount of material everytime they open their mouths. ;-)

You're right! There's too much low hanging fruit. Laura just isn't at the top of the list. She's not off limits, she's just not the first 50 things that come to mind.

I prefer a First Lady with a spine and who isn't useless. You get the sense with Laura that she's either counting the silverware or shopping. Its sort of like they stuff her into a closet in the White House until they get in trouble. Then you see her; sort of a last ditch measure.

The life of a spinster librarian probably didn't look like much fun. At least with her marriage, she got financial stability, nice places to live, free travel, and for the first part of the marriage it seems as if he was sleeping off a binge most of the time. Now that he's sober (is he?) she seems to have plenty of free time on her own..
They have probably come to an accomodation.. he needs a nice little wifey-poo and she's guaranteed to always have a cushy life and plenty of moolah.. and Babs won;t live forever :)
