| 1. That's not exactly a stretch |

no third-party candidate has ever been elected president.

look at the history of third party candidates. A party makes inroads (populist party in the late 1800's, Perot in 1992) and as soon as they get a significant portion of the vote, the party that they are drawing the most votes from caters to their voters just enough to make them irrelevant. Will never happen, would like to see it, but it will never happen, at least in my lifetime (I'm 24).

| 3. The point is, DUers don't believe a GREEN is entitled to. |
|
Just because they ARE a Green. Of course, their hypocrisy is abundant when it comes to Libertarians.

I'm a lifelong Democrat and I think Libertarians are worse than Greens. Libs would also get as bad of a wrap here if they "cost" Dems the election in 2000 like Nader, but they didn't and hopefully won't ever.
The reasons that there is a animosity towards Greens on these boards is because this is DEMOCRATIC Underground... not Green Underground. It won't be forgotten anytime soon to many what Nader caused to let the anti-christ into office.

You can't grow up to be POTUS if you're a member of the CPUSA either. And then there's the Libertarian Party, the Right-to-Life Party, the Natural Law Party, etc.....
We are America. We are a diverse nation, and there are all sorts of wingnuts who can't be elected President.

Just what exactly is it that you don't understand?
With all kidding aside, in all fairness, with amenity to all why do you expect the American populous, the voter (not just Democrats), to accept a candidate that has absolutely no political experience?
It boggles the mind. Plain and simple.
If the Green Party promotes another Presidential candidate that has NO political record to speak of, at any level, then why would John and Jane Q. Voter want to elect that candidate?
Ralph Nader has done a great amount of work for the American consumer, but that does not mean that his consumer advocacy will translate into a political triumph for this country.
Now you can hope that would be the outcome, and hope is a great thing, but if RN is really serious about public office then why doesn't he try something a little more realistic like Govenor or Congressman?
I don't think that the main concern, with many here, with the Green party is about their existence but rather its continued support for a candidate that may bring them national recognition and funding if they hit that magic %5+ number.
So why vote green?
Convince me, but please don't tell me that the Republicans and the Democrats are exactly the same, or that if Al Gore had been elected then we would be in the same place that we are today. The last 2.5 years have proved those statements to be false.
<On Edit> I am an independent.

| 9. Come on, did you read your original post? Let's unite, not divide!!! |
|
Seriously!
If you think this is an issue then maybe you should look at your original post and wonder how it all started.
Do you think I have a problem with the Green Party? I didn't, until the crap I read every day from Greens that make me feel subhuman because I will do what it takes to get Bush out and that means voting for the democratic nomination.
You started the thread and myself as a veteran of a few of those threads - you dish it out be ready to take it back and sometimes 10-fold over. Believe me, I've had poster regret before!
Back when DU first started and we were arguing who lost the election for Gore, I was one of the biggest voices saying that it was NOT Ralph Nadar & the Green Party's fault. Gore ran a poor campaign, he lost states like WV that overwhelmingly voted for the Dem Senator and stil voted for Bush and no matter what anyone says: Florida was rigged - Nadar could have dropped out and told the Greens to vote for Gore and we would have still lost Florida.
What I can't figure out is why Greens are going such grandscale when they need to start small and build bigger. Instead of spewing garbage we should be talking about getting more greens on local and statewide races. And why not recruit us democrats who will only vote Dem for president, but who would considering voting green in other elections? Personally, I'm almost at a point that I would rather vote Republican than Green just from the poor treatment I get from Grens around here (And btw, my Green friends in Delaware have never ONCE questioned my voting strategies just as I respect theirs).
And finally, there is a better solution to getting a winner on the ticket that we can all support and who can beat Bush and that's getting involved NOW. We all have our candidates of choice that we support so what are we doing to help get them elected? Dean and Kucinich were sleepers only a few months ago and yet they are hanging tough with the big ticket names like Kerry, Gephardt and Lieberman. And we have months to go until the primary season starts.
WE have 2 choices when it comes to this whole 2004 election. WE can be uniters or we can be dividers. Right here, right now we have 7 months until our first primary election and over a year until the democratic nomination. NO ONE HAS TO COMMIT TO ANY CANDIDATE RIGHT NOW NO ONE HAS TO SAY "THIS IS WHAT I'LL DO IF DEMOCRATIC 'SO-N-SO' GETS THE NOMINATION" So instead of starting these insane posts of "Who would you vote for if so-n-so gets the nomination" let's ask "What are you going to do to make sure we get a quality candidate on the democratic ticket. Then go out and do it. I am!
