folks we have here in our progressive enclave! I confess I did vote R many years ago (for Goldwater. Yep, I'm an old phart)...I was in the Air Force and was right on the verge of shuffling off 20 years of right-wing indoctrination by my neo-nazi father. To my shame, I embraced many of his bigoted, racist, antisemitic views far too long.
I'm a quick study in most areas, but was too intimidated to realize my own failure to grasp simple truths back then.

I only went off course once and I can't remember which year. I wrote in Ralph Nader one year because he wasn't on the ballot. I don't think it was last time. I was a little less informed back then and I was disgruntled with the Dems as much as the Repugs. I saw Nader speak on TV quite a bit and I liked what he was saying. He made sense, so I voted my heart. This time I will be voting to get Bush out of office no matter who wins the primary.

But vote for a Repug? NEVER. My grandfather is a veteran local Democrat politician. About 20 years of offices in the city. Never lost a race. We never will vote repug for president.

it's what republicans do. What good do they do for me, my people, or my land? What good have they ever done? None. Right from the very beginning of this country, republicans (first known as Federalists) have worked ceaselessly to take power away from the American people and give it to the aristocracy and big business. As far as I am concerned, you have to be brainwashed in order to vote republican unless you are conscienceless. Republicans consistently trash the environment, resist constructive social change, restrict civil liberties, favor business interests over those of individuals, etc., ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

Republicans have consistently prevented my country from evolving into a sane, safe, environmentally clean nation that provides every one of its citizens with the opportunity to advance personally and economically. Republicans don't even want every child to have the opportunity for decent healthcare, for god's sake. You want me to respect them for this? Not!

Is the us against them mentality producing good results in this country? Absolutely. If it weren't for Democrats preventing republicans from destroying the environment, restricting civil liberties, and limiting opportunity for those who were not born with a silver spoon in their mouth, the country would already be a toxic wasteland with a fascist feudalist government. It's up to me and every other Democrat to prevent republicans from literally destroying the world. The brainwashing didn't just start with Bush. Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II. Take your pick. Every one of them was hellbent on making this a far worse country for the majority of the Americans to live in. Every one of them sucked as a leader, and not a one of them did a GD single good thing for the people of this country.

And yes, if there are some honest to god average republicans walking around who are actual human beings, and they are going to vote Democrat, I welcome them.

After the Gingrich Takeover in 1994, that number dwindled on the national level, though I continued to evaluated individual races by the person, not the Party. In 1998 and 2000. when it was revealed that the Republican Party was no more, replaced by the Imperial Bushevik Party (though in 1998 Caeser had not yet tipped his hand), I vowed to NEVER AGAIN FEED THE BEAST.

As a moderate, I am often conflicted about this. There are more than a few issues that I agreed with Republicans on, and sometimes wish that party still existed so that I could vote with/for them again on issues I agree with the conservative viewpoint.

But the Republican Party is no more, the conservative viewpoint is no more, all subsumed in Loyalty to Fuhrer and the Party-Loyal Right-Wing Sub-Media's Bushevik vision of orthodoxy, which clings to no principle but power, no truth but how many lies can be successfully told.

... I voted for Reagan twice. By 1986, I realized I was wrong. In national elections, I haven't voted Rep since.

However, for Dallas mayor in the last election, I had to vote for the Rep. She (Laura Miller) has impressed me several times - I don't always agree with her but she works on reasonable convictions and seems to have the whole city in mind with her actions. It didn't help that the Dem that opposed her was a good-old-boy-Dallas-biz lackey like Ron Kirk who preceeded him.

So I voted Repug as an 18-yr old, then switched to Libertarian when I went to college. I've never voted for a Republican president, but I have for local elections. I think voting is a responsibility and I try to vote for the best candidate. I've voted for a couple Republican backed judges with more experienced and who have reputations for fairness. If it's a close call, then I'll vote Dem.

I'm expecting voters to look beyond party lines and vote for the Dem. presidential nominee next Nov. It's only fair for us to look at the credentials of all the candidates who run for office too.

I have voted for Republican Bob Taft twice for governor of Ohio. But, before you slam me and ban me from the site, you must understand that he really had no credible competition anyway, especially the 2nd time. Ohio is a Democrat-starved state, it's nearly impossible to find electable Democratic candidates. (We've tried hard to get my Rep., Marcy Kaptur, to run for Senate, but she just ain't interested :-( )

Besides, Taft is really quite moderate, anyway. In a middle-of-the-road state which, for whatever reason, has no serious Democratic competition, he could be almost as conservative as he wants. Yet, the Religious Reich doesn't like him, the NRA doesn't trust him, and the Teamsters endorsed him. He picked a moderate, black, pro-choice city councilwoman from Columbus to run as his Lt. Governor. All of this says something about him. In Georgia or Alabama or S. Carolina, he could easily pass for a Democrat.

There are moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats who can get way more done for both parties by being so.
