I feel bad for George McGovern

Every four years political pundits and politicians begin using the word "McGovernize". Given that George S. McGovern was a decorated WWII hero, served in the Kennedy Administration's Food For Peace Program, a US Senator who fought on behalf of the disadvantaged and a Presidential candidate who valiently fought against an unjust war--you would think it would be a compliment to be "McGovernized". But sadly, it means only one thing--you are a sure loser. You will be eaten up by the opposition and spit out and considered too far to the left for the "mainstream" of this country--yep, a 49-state loser.

This just isn't fair to George McGovern, a man who has done more good for his country than many of the occupants of the White House. I wish we could stop using the term "McGovernize" as it lacks respect for a true American hero.

That is a shame, as McGovern is an honorable man and one who history has vindicated, in his own lifetime yet!

Despite this, he is the object of dismissal and derision here on supposedly lefty DU. What a darn shame that is.

4. I saw McGovern on TV the other day

and he seemed like a nice man.

He pointed out that Gore had honored Lieberman by asking him to be his running mate in 2000, and Gore
didn't owe Liberman anything.

Also, I wish we could make the term "McGovernize" to mean something else - like 'Oh yes, you mean a hero", but I don't actually see it happening.

6. The media loves this kind of political piling-on

There's some kind of cruel cultural dog-eat-dog, survival of the fittest instinct that the media gets into. Anyone that's decent, intelligent, or well-educated, or soft-spoken is immediately branded a weakling by the press that takes a sadistic delight in ridiculing anyone who they know is too polite or incredulous to fight back. Humphery, McGovern, Mondale, Clinton, Gore -- even Dole and Bush's father. The media loves assholes. Makes you wonder if some people just aren't satisfied until they can worship some modern-day Mussolini.

7. We would have been

a lot better off if he had been elected. I have met Senator George McGovern several times here in Massachusetts. He is just an honest decent person of great intelect. The people may not want honest and decent people to be president. They watch too much tv and think all problems can be solved in an hour. All the news fits into 30 minutes. They are to busy to care about their lives and their children's lives. hat is why bush's, weapons of mass destruction, lies by the car load and cowboy attitude resonates with them. Let george do it.

8. The finest

I still refer to myself as a McGovern democrat. Some postings say it as well as it can be said. A gentlemen of great intellect and insight. Not just knowlegeable but wise. And walked the walk when he had to. The media dismisses this man way too much and amazingly gives the dumbest, most dangerous and least courageous president in 30 years an easy time. Fair and Balanced? They all should be ashamed.

Had McGovern been elected in '72 we would have been out of Nam earlier, we would have had an honest man as president, we would have had a real progressive administration. We probably would have avoided Ronald Reagan. The world would have been better off.

Which means that through the politics of personal ridicule and character assassination, they can defeat the best man for the job and permit a crook to win the office and later be kicked out on his patooty. To "McGovernize" means to slander an honest person and candidate for personal political gains and to do it in an underhanded and criminal way if necessary.

And what makes it worse is that McGovern really does have the backbone and principles that the Democratic Party used to stand for. He still is strong on many issues today.

Instead of demonizing him the Democratic Party ought to be listening to him more.

You are correct. McGovern was a fine example of an American Hero.

He is one of the men I would consider an ideal candidate. Even his military record is unblemished. Steven Ambrose wrote about him a lot in the book the Wild Blue about his exploits as a Bomber Pilot in WWII

have been good and decent. Good for them and us. That said, it ain't worth a bucket of warm spit if they lose, and especially lose to the vermin who win.
