No celebration in Sunni Triangle
Those who supported Saddam the most are not celebrating this morning. The ones who benefited most economically from the old Government. Perhaps they are realizing that now they will be under a Bush economy.

3. I didn't see a celebration anywhere except for fifty
people in a very "tight" shot on CNN in Baghdad.

The celebration will come when we leave that country

6. I didn't say fifty people are glad to see him gone
Probably most of the country is glad he won't be back in power. Just as many as those who want the U.S. to leave so they can have their country back.

I don't think realistically that this capture will have much effect on Iraq one way or the other, except that the Sunnis will now feel comfortable coming out in the open to demand that we leave and escalate attacks against the occupation forces.

After we are gone, it is more likely than not that there will be an islamic fundamentalist cleric in charge of Iraq, which is this country's worst nightmare. These types are philosophically aligned in more ways with Osama bin Laden than Saddam ever was.

Geopolitically, this is the beginning of a much worse period in history for the United States.

14. "The Job"???
Pathetic indeed.

Are you convinced that Smirky invaded Iraq to "free" the Iraqis?

If so, we need have no further discussions as they would be pointless for us both.

Have a good life.

Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 11:15 AM by cosmicdot
what part of the Luftwaffe do you like?

Is it the Stalinist leanings of Saddam that you like, or his centralized control of the Iraqi's daily lives?

why is this flame necessary? it's totally out of context and inappropriate, if not downright rude

10. being against an invasion of a nation which was not an international
threat does not make anyone pro-Bathist. Show us where there has been any DU support of Saddam. I would bet there aren't any pictures of any DUers shaking hands with him like there are of bush* administration members doing so.

Support the troops: insist they not be put at risk for the coporate interests of the likes of Halliburton. They are serving our nation honorably and we owe it to them not to risk them on private investment ventures like seizing the natural resources of a sovereign
people who have not engaged in hostilites against anyone else.

2. The political battle in Iraq (insurgency) is not over
The more I think about it, the capture of Sadaam will have small effect on the big picture.

19. Walt, your "gut" must be linked to the same wave as mine
Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 04:12 PM by Military Brat
Why won't this sinking feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach go away? It is possible that a plug in the resistance dam has now broken loose, and the power struggle which spews forth will be havoc such as we have never seen.

Imagine yourself an Iraqi, young and strong, relentless and power-hungry, an Islamic fundamentalist who is tired of going along with the status quo. There are leaders, and there are followers. You are a leader, charismatic and cunning. Those who followed Saddam now gravitate to you and your idealogy, having learned that Saddam's secularism is a failure. You have learned from Saddam's mistakes. What do you do with your new chance to wrest power from the Americans, now that the threat of Saddam's return is finally gone?

Edited for clarity.

Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 04:13 PM by thebigidea
and sorry, there is almost NO similarity between postwar Iraq and Germany. You didn't have this level of resistance in Germany.

http://slate.msn.com/id/2087768/

"According to America's Role in Nation-Building: From Germany to Iraq, a new study by former Ambassador James Dobbins, who had a lead role in the Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, and Kosovo reconstruction efforts, and a team of RAND Corporation researchers, the total number of post-conflict American combat casualties in Germany—and Japan, Haiti, and the two Balkan cases—was zero."

30. we can agree that your WWII werewolves comparison was utter bullshit
Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 05:04 PM by thebigidea
since the "werewolves" story is mostly myth and bullshit to begin with.

"I think we're doing things correctly in a country like Iraq."

Oh, things are going smashingly. coupla hundred soldiers dead? Well, that's to be expected. Still no electricity? Lets blame those South Korean contractors.

Quagmire, eh?

RUMSFELD: "I don't do quagmires."

No, but they do you.

Your charming story about how Iraq isn't a quagmire would be appreciated by all lovers of fine comedy, I'm sure.

31. You're a friendly sort
Here I am trying to hold a civil conversation and you end up with a civil war.

I'll try it again.

c'mon it's easy

Now maybe there is a bit of myth associated with the werewolves as there is with every shadowy terror group. And believe me, I wouldn't be surprised if the History Channel made things up. But you're not sharing in the hug.

c'mon man
