| I've been noticing lots of "For Sale" signs on SUVs lately. |
|
I've been seeing lots of larger vehicles, probably used primarily for commuting, with "For Sale" signs on them.
With national gas prices topping $2.00/gallon, I find myself chuckling whenever I see one of those behemoths on the road, or at the gas station.
More than one monster vehicle owner has asked me over the past two weeks what kind of mileage my Camry gets.

Good for them! And I hope they take huge losses on the sales, too.

| 3. We are going to get a hybrid electric this year |
|
most likely a Honda Accord, once it hits the market
And that has GOOD mileage.... very good mileage indeed
We looked at the Escape (Hybrid electric as well), but I do not like Ford.

that the hybrid electric vehicles aren't getting anywhere near the mileage advertised.
Do you know if there is any truth to that?
You might want to look into it first...

| 7. Actually quite the opposite... |
|
... people I know with them are getting very good mileage, at least the Japanese ones.
Don't know about the Ford Escape.
Cheers.

| 11. Methinks there was a problem in the way it was calculated... |
|
But it does have much better fuel economy as compared to a regular car. The EPA is working on correcting the way it is calculated.

| 13. It's all in how you drive them |
|
If you drive the car like a regular car, the mileage isn't as good as advertised. Still decent, because those cars are fairly small, but not as high as advertised.
Apparently it's all in the brakes. When you stop a hybrid you are supposed to feather the brakes so you get a nice slow deceleration--the batteries charge as you brake. If you stop like you were entering pit road--stay into the gas until three feet from the intersection, then use both feet on the brake pedal--you don't get the full effect of owning a hybrid automobile.
If you feather the brakes in a regular car, you get better gas mileage too. Not much, but some.

| 15. I believe I read that Ford is using Toyota's technology |
|
for the Escape. Hopefully, we'll be seeing more hybrids in the future. In that respect, the high gas prices will be a good thing.

| 8. I make bets on stuff like this... |
|
... how much ya bet that they sell the SUVs at a loss, buy something small and economical, and then when gasoline goes down to $1.65 a gallon, they sell the economy cars at a loss and buy new SUVs....
Carmakers are going to be loving this ten months from now.

My Buddy at the dealership said that many owners of larger sedans, 6 and 8 cylinders are trading to 4's now.
