| "Jason and the Argonauts". One fine adventure film. |
|
Great story, excellent special effects from the master, Ray Harryhausen...and more than a bit of homoerotic subtext. :-)
I re-watched it again Friday night and couldn't get over how good it still holds up.

| 1. Ray's films are all.... |

good to fine. Some adolescent plotting, but the special effects are great. And many had Bernard Herrmann scores, and that, in itself, is enough to recommend them.

| 2. Harryhausen is still the master |
|
Even in the digital age (Lord of the Rings and Troy are eye-popping), his effects still create awe. I find the effects to be more fun. I remember watching "Independence Day" and thinking as the buildings exploded how neat "Earth Vs. Flying Saucers" was, and how as great looking "Independence Day" was, it just wasn't the same.
I can't remember who was responsible for "King Kong", but I see they are making another remake. It can never match the original no matter how many digital effects they put in it.

Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. Harryhausen did his first professional work in Mighty Joe Young, the drunk Joe in the cage sequence was his.

It's definitely a keeper. I've always enjoyed that one. (And yes... the may/september ("daddy"/"son") references didn't escape my notice either.)

| 4. I prefer The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.... |
|
but Jason and the Argonauts is fine.
The skeletons in Sinbad though man...yet to be topped today. And that fight between the cyclops and the dragon is amazing, especially if you're on acid and you get the chance to watch this on the big screen.
I seriously urge anyone who;s a fan of these movies to go and watch them on the big screen if you get the chance.
