| Poll question: Politics and romance: Could you date someone apolitical? |
|
Just curious how big of a role politics plays in your current relationship or is it a consideration when getting involved with someone.

My political beliefs are a core part of my values as a whole. I wouldn't want to ever start anything with such a chasm on that level.

Or are all chasms inherently so deep as to betray all other and preceding levels?

That's too much of an ideological shift for me. I'd be constantly correcting their parroted FOX News talking points.

I could date someone with much more moderate view than mine, but not someone that is totally apolitical and apathetic. I need someone who can understand and apreciate my commitement to change through political action.

And I "converted" them and got them on the road to being political. Anyone I date would have to have a mindset similar enough to mine anyway, so it is pretty much impossible that even an apolitical guy would be one who would become a republican. And that leaves repubs out of the equation as well.

I could never date a repuke. I am not even able to be friends with repukes. Too little of me and my time to waste it on assholes.
I like to think I could date anyone of my political persuasion no matter how active they are, but lately it has been driving me crazy that I have fallen into this political-obsession-black-hole and my partner remains uninterested.
Everything is political.

and I think that it would be too difficult to date a man that has opposite beliefs on such a fundamental level. Some of the biggest arguments that I have ever had were over politics so I definitely could not date someone who didn't share that common interest. I wouldn't mind if he was apolitical but he has to have a "left leaning" deep down inside

'political,' but I do kind of wonder whether I could find some good stuff going on with someone who'd buy the Republican thing; I'm almost 100% certain that I couldn't ever get on with a rabid neocon variety. As for the 'regular,' old-fashioned Republican type, there're too many variables to say anything definitive up front, and a lot would depend on whether the relationship was short-term or longer. But apolitical?...no problema.

He's nominally fairly left, by the standards of his home country (Israel), but he's one of the least political people I know. He says that "politics is boring."
On the other hand, he's hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhot, and I'd go out with him in an instant if he weren't eight time zones away... :)
Edit: Added a word for clarity. :)

there. We're both liberal on issues and, wonderfully, he's gotten me interested in Canadian politics.
Being in a relationship with someone who doesn't care about politics is not an option, at least to me.

I don't care what her particular political persuasion is. I've known enough people from all parts of the spectrum to realize that political beliefs are religious orientations -- they're "yeah boo" statements, not logical statements.
That being said, my fiancee is farther left than I am on most social and fiscal issues. She's garden variety academic left, I'm garden variety business left.

not as political as I am, or even a moderate Republican for that matter. It would depend on whether I found her compatible on other things (for example, shared interest in music).
The more apathetic, or the more hardcore GOP partisan she was, though, the less likely I would be to date her.

I was genuinely interested in until I discovered something about them I just didn't like, anti-choice for example. Because that tells me they might have other issues with women.
But just dating, yeah. Why not? A good time's a good time.
LTR, no no way. They have to be more or less in the same camp as me. I care too much about this stuff to just let it go.

Politics has become such a huge part of my life in the last few years that it would be difficult for me to interact with, much less date, someone who utterly didn't care. There'd have to be some sort of opening -- "I haven't really paid too much attention. What have I missed?" could be a good start. "Eh. Bush, Gore, what's the difference? Oh, it's Kerry now? Well, same thing" isn't.
I think there'd be a better chance of me dating a Republican -- we could be decent sparring partners for awhile -- but I don't know if it would last.
Then again, I know very few utterly apolitical people now -- even my mom, who votes religiously but that's about it, is getting into it. My "swing voter" assistant, who called himself apolitical when he started, is starting to get fed up with all of the partisan sniping and is trying to figure out how to get more respect for the independent voter (other than the pandering both parties do to win their vote). It's a start. For the record: In my current relationship, we are both very politically aware and active, and we're on the same side (with some natural disagreements about specifics). But you knew that...

on this one as well. In fact, some of our plans are directly effected by this year's election cycle. Hmm... personal happiness or impacting the fate of the world?
Somebody less politically committed wouldn't understand, like my sister, who thinks we both are a tad obsessed.

As long as they're intelligent and can hold up their end of a conversation about SOMETHING that interests me, they don't have to be as into politics as I am.
For that matter, I've thought lately that as big a politics junkie as I am, it might be GOOD for me to find someone not so into it, if only to have a way to get away from it now and then.
