| Greatest Western All-time??? |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 01:40 PM by Feeney2
AMC has been showing "Once Upon a Time in the West". Leone made some great ones but "Wild Bunch" has to be my favorite.

| 8. I read somewhere on DU that John Wayne hated this movie |
|
Didn't like the idea of hero begging for help

| 12. He also scolded Kirk Douglas... |
|
for playing Van Gough. Wayne didn't think that tough guys should play weaklings. Douglas shot back that Wayne's problem was that he really thought that he was John Wayne.

| 20. If I remember, Wayne didn't like it because it was 'commie' |
|
I believe the screenwriter was blacklisted, and Wayne hated the idea of the end of the movie, wherein no one had helped the hero and as a result he throws down his badge in disgust at the end.

Also to be considered is Unforgiven.
And the best western television show is the incomparable Deadwood.

| 18. I agree, FD. The G,B and the U hands down! |
|
No contest, in my opinion, of course.
The scene where Eli Wallach is running through the graveyard with the cool music going in the background is my favorite all time movie scene.
An absolute classic!

Anthony Perkins, Henry Fonda. 1957.
Anything with John Wayne is off my list because he was a McCarthy collaberator. Ditto Reagan.

| 17. Mine, too. I'd put Lonesome Dove second |
|
mainly because I hate most westerns, but I thought the characters in Unforgiven and Lonesome Dove where complex, and there were no grand sweeping commentaries in either film, aside from the implied "life was tough" message.

Best Western I've seen recently: the HBO series "Deadwood." Absolutely brilliant; the season finale last Sunday had the same epic sweep you see in the very best Western movies. Highly recommended....
