| Poll question: Song you never, ever need to hear again... |
|
as long as you live. These are not particularly songs you dislike, just ones you've heard enough times to have them permanently etched onto your cerebral canvas, thus negating the need to have them blared at you from the classic-rock station every 30 minutes for the remainder of your life. :D
Remember, these aren't songs you hate, just ones you've heard entirely enough for one lifetime. Feel free to add any I may have left off.

But a European distributor for their label at the time, CMC International, did. It is an import, not one of their official releases, so like many cheesy Euro imports (for any band) it is saddled with stupid marketing gimmickry.
They were not happy with the title, but legally, it was within the rights of their label to do that. They quit CMC as soon as the contract expired.

You know NOTHING about that song, or that band.
Skynyrd were neil Young fans, who wrote that as a JOKE, because they thought it was unfair to brand ALL southerners as racists.
They mock Wallace in that song, who bassist Leon Wilkeson said "we supported Wallace as much as the average American supported Hitler".
On the same album as "Sweet Home Alabama" is a song called "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" which tells a evocative story of a young white boy who learns to play blues guitar from an elderly black man, and how the white boy was ostracized wrongly for it. If that doesn't shoot down the ignorant crap about them being racist, I don't know what does.
Skynyrd wrote songs against handguns, for helping the poor, and protecting the environment. They were populist, but in a fairly progressive vein.

Horrible the first time I heard 'em and only made worse by constant repetition:
...anything from the movie "Grease" ..."December 1963 (Oh what a night)" by Frankie Valli ..."Celebrate" by Cool & the Gang ..."Torn between Two Lovers" by whoever it was ..."Any way You Want it" by Journey
Oh man, I'm getting really nauseous just thinking about awful songs that got played over and over again. I'm gonna stop now.

And this is just the most obnoxious stuff from the 80s and 90s!
At least the songs mentioned above had some redeeming qualities beyond being vaguely catchy, the stuff on my list is so irredeemably bad that I'm almost ashamed I remember any of them.

more along the lines of the *Classic Rock* station that every city has. I guess instead of slamming them I should feel bad that the poor bastards have only the 10 records above to choose from, being as that's ALL THEY EVER PLAY! :P
You bring up a valid point, however, as some of those you mentioned on occasion have had me white-knuckling the steering wheel in aggravation to the point of nearly wrecking my car.
On edit: I am ASTONISHED no one has yet chosen "Light my Fire"

He said he was "proud to have my name in a song like theirs." He has played it live, and he even wrote 3 songs he wanted them to cover back in 1977, but they could not fit on their last album - "Powderfinger", Sedan Delivery", and "Captain Kennedy".
Of course, I hate the radio, and am better off since quitting it - they overplay all good songs.

I mean: HOW in the world could two people, presumably in a committed relationship, who are just bored with each other, each cheat on the other by placing a personals ad, and then laugh about it later?
I sure wouldn't be laughing.
(But... the tune still really sucks, too!)

My roommate freshman year in college use to put that 45 on the stereo on auto-replay for HOURS when her boyfriend came over to visit Friday night before he took her home for the weekend (YEAH!!!!). I was willing to give up the room on Friday night for peace and quiet the rest of the weekend, but it required hearing that dreadful song for hours on end. (No, I didn't stay in the room, I went to the room next door until it was time to go out to the parties.) If I never hear that song again, it will be too soon (and that was almost 25 years ago! | 40. Layla's got two versions I'm sick of. |
|
In the days when I used to have to stare into space (HS English et al.), I compiled a pretty good list of my 500 favorite songs. I've gotta admit that I change the channel for about 100 of them. I've singled out Layla since the unplugged version has given me two songs to be sick of.
A good related question is what entire band has filled your belly for a lifetime. Clapton's Blues Power, and a few others, still do something for me. But the entire output of Kansas, The Eagles (including Joe Walsh's solo career, but oddly not Don Henley's heavily played solo career), David Bowie, and Bad Company have for me no more appeal than commercials. I used to really like these bands.
I guess after decades of listening to this, some of it's bound to get permanently old. The dinosaurs that are still in the game put out very little of interest anymore, and the radio stations are unwilling to play something different from the same genre. I'm trying to look for something different at present by way of the obscure art-rock and psychedelic groups. I'm trying to find CD's from The Move, Matching Mole, Gentle Giant, The Soft Machine, and the like. If anyone has any recommendations, let me know.

Back in '96 a group of us (family and friends) decided to go camping for two weeks. Anyway there was this group of teeny bopper girls there and they would play this song over and over again. Now the song is bad anyway, but hearing it constantly was a joke.
The one thing that made everyone in the camping grounds stand and applaud was when a guy got up, walked over to their camp site and switched it off. LOL
I never wanna hear it again!

| 71. I've never heard it, so I'd like to for curiosity |
|
and because it's so notorious. Telling me I'd be sorry afterwards would probably just make me want to hear it even more.

| 72. Merely the lyrics will make you ill. |

Along with emerging materialism and rising energy prices, it was responsible for the 70's malaise. REALLY, YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THERE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
If you *must* investigate this thing further, here's the lyrics. YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET THIS TUNE IN YOUR HEAD. YOU WILL NEED DRUGS AND/OR ECT TO GET RID OF IT.:
Muskrat, muskrat candlelight/Doin' the town and doin' it right In the evenin'/It's pretty pleasin' Muskrat Susie, muskrat Sam /Do the jitterbug out in muskrat land And they shimmy /And Sammy's so skinny And they whirled and they twirled and they tangoed /Singin' and jinglin' the jango Floatin' like the heavens above /It looks like muskrat love Nibblin' on bacon, Chewin' on cheese /Sammy says to Suisie "Honey would you please be my missus?" And she says yes /With her kisses And now he's ticklin' her fancy /Rubbin' her toes, Muzzle to muzzle, now anything goes As they wiggle /And Sue starts to giggle And they whirled and they twirled and they tangoed /Singin' and jinglin' the jango Floatin' like the heavens above /It looks like muskrat love

|

| 73. I STRONGLY advise you to never hear it |
|
there is an inordinate chance that it will become stuck in your brain. Once this happens, it will return, again and again, when you least expect it. This is a scientific fact, there is something about the melody which makes it one of the most common intrusive stuck in the head songs. (There's a word for them, but I forget.)
