When Jon Stewart criticizes Democrats, it runs some crazy here

Case in point: there is a TDS thread in GD, and a couple posters are lamenting the fact that Jon made fun of John Kerry.

This happened during the convention as well.

Get the fuck over it.

Jon Stewart is a comedian. A damn fine one at that.

Are some of us so thin skinned, and so lacking in cluenessless that we don't appreciate a good joke? Even when it's at one of our guys expense?

I don't see Jon openly and repeatedly making fun of Dems.

However, he does so when the situation warrants it.

he's not perfect and it is possible to make fun of him without hating him. I can't laugh when a right-wing jerk like O'Liely makes a nasty comment about Kerry but I can laugh when Stewart jokes about him.

Most of the time when TDS makes fun of Dems they deserve it. Either because they did something truly funny or because they were complete sell-outs and need to be kicked in the ass for it. I WANT Stewart to hold them accountable.

There have been some hilarious pieces on Dems. I loved the alternative Kerry Bio Film.

OTOH when Jon goes for easy laughes based on Repug Talking Points (Kerry stiff, Kerry Boring) I am disappointed, because it is neither thoughtful or funny.

Clearly they are new viewers of Jon's who have only watched the Daily Show post-Clinton. If they had been longtime viewers they would have known this is exactly what Jon has been doing all along. Jon doesn't give anyone a free ride -- Clinton got it as good as Bush has, though Bush has given Jon more outrageous ammo by a longshot.

was hilarious. My husband commented on how Democrats can laugh at themselves much more than Republicans can. A gross over generalization to be sure. If we can't laugh at ourselves, then we will also not question ourselves. I would say that not questioning oneself is a big ugly trait of the present administration.

I don't think Jon was being that hard on the Democratic Party anyway. I do think he made a point that is worth thinking about. At the end he mentioned all the good democrats thinking they were going to win, having their victory parties planned, and then along comes Florida. I took that to mean that according to the votes, the Dems should win, but the Republicans aren't playing by the rules. :hippie:

30. The only thing that ever bothered me about TDS

was the fact that for the longest time, Jon would have "real journalists" on the show and, no matter how obviously they were shilling/making excuses/dissembling, he'd softball the interviews. I think it was a personal thing -- he felt like he wasn't a "real journalist," and therefore had to defer to them because they were more experienced, knowledgeable, whatever.

I think he's turned the corner on that -- guess that's what happens when you get a Peabody and are included in televised discussions and treated as if you are a "real journalist" or at least a "real cultural/political commentator." He is, and he has as much right as anybody else to call bullshit on things -- he lives in this country, too.

Guess I just thought there were very few people to whom he had any reason to genuflect. It's not like Jon started out as a journalist -- he was a stand-up comic and cultural commentator to start with, and anybody who went on The Daily Show without knowing that was an idiot -- so I guess it was disappointing to me to see somebody that bright and incisive, as well as funny, waste opportunities like he did by being cowed. Hopefully, he's finally getting over that, after all this time.

Where he admitted he felt strange pretending to be a journalist, and that it amazed him that any "real journalist" would ever come on the show knowing what it was about. But, then, he's been included and taken seriously by "real journalists" since, I think he's more comfortable with it these days. Maybe it's just that he's had to realize, as uneasy as it may make him, that there isn't much "real journalism" these days, and that most of them have no more right to call themselves journalists than he and the writing staff of The Daily Show.
