Anyone know of an affordable hotel in Toronto?

We're going there next week. I'd like to stay downtown if possible. A swimming pool would be nice for the kids but not essential.

2. My two cents ...

Mr. Nownow and I have been to Toronto several times in the past five years, and I can tell you that you get better 'bang for the buck' out in the 'burbs. You can usually find a room within walking distance of a train station, or with a 'park and ride' free parking lot.

The nearer you are to the center of the city, the more you'll pay for less. That's how it is anywhere -- Chicago, Cincinnati, Atlanta. If you have AAA, make sure you let them know, since often the chains will offer a discount. We've booked rooms through AAA before, in fact -- it's usually worth it to ask for any discount you might qualify for, and most of the chain hotels have some kind of discount or other.

We don't have kids, so your mileage may vary, of course. If you find something downtown that seems like a good value, be careful about what's in the neighborhood, though. We got a nice, reasonable room at a Best Western downtown once. It was a lovely little hotel in a historic building. The room was nice. Everything was Archie until we crawled in bed around midnight and the disco next door kicked into gear. We didn't get any sleep that night, and bailed out the next morning to a Best Western in Mississauga that was a few blocks from a transit point.

That applies to any city of any size, actually, not just Toronto. And the disco may not be there anymore.
