| Poll question: Favorite Buck Owens song? |
|
I was fifteen, sick to death of "Hee Haw", and mortified that my parents watched it. If you had told me then I would someday be a Buck Owens fan, I would have laughed and scoffed derisively. But guess what? Glad I'm not limited to liking only what I liked at 15.
Though not as visibly as Waylon and Willie, not to mention Steve Earle, Buck was a rebel. He insisted on playing his own music his own way, with his own band and in his own town. This at a time when country singers were supposed to go to Nashville and sing formulaic pap over sweet, canned backing tracks laid down by session players and string sections. Sounds like today, doesn't it?
Heard this morning that Buck is recovering from a stroke. Apparently his speech has been affected somewhat, but not his singing.
Any favorites from Buck?

They're gonna make a big star out of me We'll make a film about a man who's sad and lonely And all I gotta do is act naturally
Edit - ever hear The Derailers? They're practitioner of the Buck Owens sound, and a fine bunch of guys, too.

I understand they had a personnel change lately. Hope that doesn't keep them from recording and touring.
The main proponent of the Buck Owens "Bakersfield Sound", of course, is Dwight Yoakum.
Add on edit: Raul Malo of the Mavericks sounds a bit like Buck sometimes too.

He's still gonna write, but not perform anymore. Brian Hofeldt is keeping the rest of the guys together, and they've played with Caspar Rawls on guitar, and Hofeldt doing all the vocals.

But I haven't heard a lot of his stuff, so there might be something I'd like more, if I heard it.

and I love Ray Charles' version too.
I'm from Bakersfield, so Buck is a local hero to me.

Guy by the name of Bill Woods is the one that got Buck started in the music business (along with Merle Haggard and a few others).
This was in Bakersfield, California many many moons ago.
Without Bill Woods, Buck never would have gotten out of his local honky tonk.

| 12. Hee Haw Song "Where are you tonight?" |
|
I don't think Buck Owens wrote it but it was a staple on HeeHaw.
Where oh where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and thought I'd found true love, You met another and PFFFT! You were gone.
