I was beyond stoned and I swear to god that movie couldn't possibly make sense if you weren't. The funniest fuckin movie I've ever seen! Starring the Actor...err...Actress....errr...Performer Divine.
Anyone else ever see it? I would love to hear some comments about it!

Cuddles is a remarkable, uh, character as well.
Polyester is probably the pinnacle of John Waters... really captures his weird sense of humor before he went "mainstream" with Hairspray and Serial Mom, but it's a lot more accessible than his other stuff.

| 3. One of Waters' best films. There are so many good quotes in that movie. |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 12:24 AM by RodneyCK2
The little speech made by her daughter about the baby insider her robbing the life from her right before repeatedly ramming her stomach into the arm of the couch is a classic.
Don't even get me started on Cuddles..
"Oh, Cuddles, I am an alcoholic!"--Francine (Divine) to Cuddles (Edith Massey)
A classic for the alternative mind.

|
you might consider doing so. It is a lot grossers than Polyester, but Divine is at his best in it. The woman who plays cuddles is fantastic as Eddy, Divine's retarded mother who loves the egg man.
A very sweet woman had told me that Pink Flamingos was a good movie. This was about 20 years ago. On her recommendation I rented the then Beta Tape to watch it. I had no idea what I was getting into. I sat in sock for a few minutes, and it changed me for life. <hee hee> After multiple viewings, I can actually watch the end without gagging! ;-) :hippie:

|
I loved that flick--I have one of those original scratch and sniff cards someplace...
I do think that Waters' early stuff was WAY less polished, but it was still fun. If you ever saw Pink Flamingos, you know what I'm talking about on that one...

|
essentially a collection of scratch-and-sniff. The screen would tell you which number you should smell, like old sneakers, etc. for the ultimate cinematic experience.
I'm glad John Waters didn't give out smell-o-vision cards for "Pink Flamingos". I shutter to imagine the odors on that one.

The entire time I'm sitting there and I saw one of the numbers come up on the screen indicating which square to scratch and sniff I swore if I had one I would have to wait and find out what the smell was before I would scratch it.

I was terrified of that card for some reason. My friend kept laughing at me and telling me just to smell the goddamn thing. I kept expecting one of them to be something REALLY awful!

I had both polyester and Pink Flamingos on Beta tape without a Beta machine that worked, so I purchased the latest DVDs. They actually reissued the scratch 'n sniff cards. :hippie:

I've made quite a few John Waters and Divine references (including Edith Massey and dog-shit-on-sidewalk-eatin') and no one bites. Strangely enough, back in the day when I could stomache a trip to freeperville, once there was a discussion on S. Clay Wilson, which completely floored me. They were fans! For those who don't know, S. Clay Wilson invented uber-perverted comix.
Now - if I could just find another fan of Joel Peter Witkin. Well, that's not a freeper.

I don't know why but I love that line. All the best lines in John Waters movies were said by Edith Massey. Also the classic "Puur Francine ... Puur puur Francine."

She really was too much for me to handle. I don't think anyone could have played such a bad actress as good as she did. I'm just really glad I watched it stoned, othersie I would have thought it was a really bad movie!

you might also want to catch "Lust in the Dust." It stars Tab Hunter, Divine, Caesar Romero, and Lainie Kazan. Divine and Laine are great together. It is another movie in the same category as Polyester. :hippie:

"The egg man is coming, the egg man is coming.." or ""Oh gee, Mr. Egg Man--I really like your eggs."
I think that was from Pink Flamingos were Divine got revenge by tonguing down the furniture and everything else he could get his tongue on in his arch-nemesis' apartment. Man, that was a great one as well.

It was in Smellorama. Tab Hunter lives openly out of the closet in my home town, Santa Fe. I was lucky to hear John Waters give a talk there last summer, and Tab Hunter gave his introduction. Tab doesn't look a day older than he did in Polyester. John Waters was so charming and sweet, even as he talked about his Pink Flamingos and Multiple Maniacs. I love the guy. And you don't need to err Divine. He was a goddess in his own right, bless his soul. :hippie:
