| confession: I *love* the Sound of Music! |
|
Though I only know the movie, having never seen the play.
And I cry every time when Maria comes back to the von Trapp family, and the kids are outside singing "Favorite Things" very dejectedly and then all of a sudden there she is, in all purity and glory, Julie Andrews singing along, returned to the kids and the man she loves!
I love the music, I love the movie. And I always cry.

it's a dark secret, but I had to admit to it. And I otherwise despise musicals, and despise schmaltz.
But Sound of Music is such good schmaltz.

...I know it's not historically accurate, but the music is fantastic. And knowing that Yul Brynner is now longer with is makes the ending eve3n more poignant.

We studied next door to the house they used for the rear exteriors of the Von Trapp house--you know, the terrace by the lake? They had to move the gazebo to a public place, because people kept trespassing to see it.
The town was lousy with tourists and there were countless Sound of Music tours available. They listed sites, including the gazebo and the Domplatz "where Gretl drops the big tomato". Well, oddly enough, all of us young American kids had grown up watching the movie on TV, with a few scenes cut out for timing. None of us could recall ever having seen Gretl drop the big tomato! (Doesn't that sound like it should be a euphemism?) Upon returning we had a Sound of Music party and rented the movie, and of course we saw the tomato seen in the Domplatz. We were all happy and fulfilled.
