Poll question: Did you " have " to sleep with a " Night Light " as a child ?

Please tell me I was not the only one . I refused to go to bed without one on and if there were no more bulbs , it was a long night .

Surprisingly nowadays ( ugh nowanights ) the room has to be completely dark before I go to sleep .

6. It's hard to have a night light when one doesn't have

electricity!! And kerosene was too expensive to burn all night. And to this day, I love sleeping in pitch dark. The problem now is that even when the moon isn't bright, I still have too many beacons from the clock, toothbrush, microwave, computer, and one night light because my husband runs into the walls when he has to get up! Not me...I go, go, go with my eyes closed and back into the bed. :bounce:

14. I don't recall fearing the dark then. I grew up on a farm

I knew what was outside and what was inside. But last night when I took my dog out before retiring for the night, I was scared--maybe concerned would be a better word--that I would be sprayed by the skunk that was out there somewhere. We made that a quick trip!!!

10. My only concerns as a child trying to sleep in a drafty old farm house

were the Chimney Swifts that sometimes flew down into a useless fireplace or bats!! On those frigid nights, I took a heated iron to bed wrapped in a cloth to warm my feet. This is the kind of iron that was heated on the wood stove to iron clothes with.

in fact I still use one because I have claustrophobia and would have a panic attack if I was completely in the dark besides I get up at night and don't want to fall over stuff in the dark.

I was scared of the dark but my parents were sadistic that way. I was not bought a nightlight and I got in trouble for complaining.

I don't remember it being an issue. I wasn't afraid of the dark. I was afraid of things coming in my windows while I slept, but the dark didn't seem to matter.

I still love the dark. I was really pissed when I had to move to town; in my old shack out in the middle of nowhere, I was 3 miles from the nearest streetlight, and could lay out in my hammock and be overwhelmed by the incredible beauty of the stars.

Here in town, even with open space on two sides, I not only have all of the city streetlights, but all the neighbors use bright "security" lights front and back. I don't keep a bulb in my porch light, or the front and back security light that my house came with. Still, I can't sit out back and watch the stars.

19. I Never Used a Nightlight

If there was something in my room, I did NOT want to see it :scared:
If I was frightened when going to bed, I covered my head with the covers and made an opening through which I could breathe.

I had to have one . I need to see everything in order to know what quick path in the opposite direction I needed to follow so I could give my mom hundreds of sleepless nights .

29. I used to do that too!

I was taken to a child psychologist at a very young age who suggested that we use a nightlight. I was so happy when I got that thing, it make me much more comfortable.

Before that, I would bother my mother in the middle of the night with my fears of what might be lurking in the dark.

I think that experiments with psychotropic drugs went a long way towards my becoming comfortable with the unknown.

It was difficult when I left for college and first slept in the dark. Now I prefer the dark for sleep. See my post about closets, though. :shudder:

are afraid of the dark as much as kids who have to sleep all by themselves in a big, dark room? After learning that my parents did not welcome my crawling in their bed at 3 a.m., I used to sneak in and get in bed with one of the younger kids.

28. My sister and I shared a room until I turned 13

I was never scared of the dark but I was scared to hang any appendage off the side of the bed. The monsters that lived under the bed would grab my leg, arm, foot or hand if they weren't squarely on the bed and preferably under the covers. Even now, at 52, I don't like to have any part of me not on the bed and under the covers.

There were also monsters that lived in the closet that would scare my sister and I. They were only there though if the door was open.

My sister and I would climb into each others bed sometimes and take turns scratching each others back. Not because we were scared but because it felt good.

39. Same here about any appendage off the bed

or not covered up. I had this irrational fear :scared: when I was a kid that some monster would lop off anything that was uncovered or hanging off the bed, I would also have most of my head covered. I still sleep with my arms and legs covered, now it is just habit. :shrug:

And hated it when a house was built 100 yards from ours and they put in a dusk to dawn light.

Before that, I could sleep with the curtains open and the sunrise was an effective alarm clock.

I had the head of Donald Duck as a nightlight! I was prone to serious ear infections, and the night light, if nothing else, reassured me until my Mom and Dad could come to my aid when I woke up screaming in pain.

I like them now because my old eyes are no good in the dark, and I have to pee once or twice a night.

31. I had a rainbow nightlight . It gave me hope .

It gave me hope that when the morning came , the monsters would no longer be in my room . At least for the day of the day lol .

Was our cat Spooky. When he slept in my bed, I was okay. But he liked to skip around all of the beds from night to night. :-)
