Sorry to be so graphic, but my right breast is killing me. I had my exploratory mammo and sonogram yesterday, and I am still sore. They took four, yes FOUR mammos of the breast, twisted it and smashed it six ways to Sunday. Then three, yes THREE sonograms, each time grinding the wand down on the same spot. Holy crap, who knew it could hurt so much?
Turns out they think I have a cyst, I'm getting a needle aspiration on Thursday to make sure. If it is a cyst, I'm surprised they didn't burst it with all that twisting and mashing!
Anyway, I needed to get that off my chest, heh heh, as it were.

You have my sympathy. It's great that you're having the lump biopsied. Don't mess around with any lump. Be sure the biopsy is totally negative.

desensitize themselves to the pain from these procedures by doing one of the three items below - once a day begining one week from the procedure:
Slam them in the car door Lower your automatic garage door on them Slam them in the refridgerator doors. Works especially well if you have a two door fridge and can slam one in each door simultaneously.

I had to get a biopsy a few years back because of calcifications in my breast. I had a totally black and blue boob for almost a month. Plus because mine tend to be "lumpy" they usually take 3 pictures. So after they are through squeezing them so hard I think they are going to explode --top and bottom, they do a diagonal one. Very nice.....not.

| 22. Mammogram Pain / Discomfort - What's the Big Deal? |
|
I put off having a mamm more than 5 years later than I should have (family history), thanks to all the wisecracks you hear from women who have the dire need to jokingly exaggerate. Made me put it off as long as possible, until I had a real scare.
Was it annoying as all hell? Yup. Uncomfortable? Yup. But pain, real, real ohgodgivemesomefuckingrelief pain? No, just a pain in the ass, so to speak. And I was sooooo pissed at myself for buying into the "refridgerator door slam" crap.
Maybe I somehow got lucky and the people who administered mine were more into pressing than smashing, but the overplay on this matter is an unkindness to your younger sisters.

Maybe I wasn't clear the first time. I have a suspicious growth in my breast. This was discovered during a routine mammogram last month. The procedures I had the other day were diagnostic, i.e., pinpointing the growth and examining it thoroughly to determnine its characteristics, size, etc. This involved four consecutive mammograms and then three consecutive sonograms on the same breast, within minutes of each other.
But I guess it really doesn't hurt. I'm just imagining things...

I must have gotten lucky; like you I got tapped two or three times, then a sonogram, which again was annoying, but overall didn't seem nearly as big a deal as people had made of it.

Women with dense "perky" breast have a harder time because there is greater pressure on the breast needed to "flatten" the tissue out so it can be imaged correctly.
When a woman has fattier breast that are softer, there is not nearly as much pressure needed.

when you have smallish, very dense, cystic breasts, it can be DAMN painful! Like "Oh my god I think I'm going to pass out" painful. That has happened to me during mammos, and it is NO fun. Also, my breast are so dense that the mammos are virtually unreadable to boot. Because of the pain, I dread my exams, and am hoping to use the new imaging technology that is available.

|
and had many, many aspirations done -- it's not a bad thing at all. What is the worst is seeing what the fluid in your breast looks like -- it is NASTY lookin' stuff! Kind of greeny brown, what swamp water looks like.
I had a giant cyst right under the nipple once and I was due for my mammo. Went in, got squished and POP! the damn thing erupted all over the plastic mammo plate. Considering nothing has EVERY come out of my breast in that manner, it was a bit disconcerting, to say the least.
If guys saw what lurked inside women's breasts, they might not be so hot for them. ;)

Since we're in the area, has anyone ever had the transvaginal ultrasound procedure???
Yeegads. Let's just say, afterwards, I thought someone should've been buying me dinner.
I felt a tiny bit better knowing that there WAS justice in the world because guys get the transrectal version.
