| Tennis Fans! Any US Open Predictions? |
|
I think the women's side is pretty wide open, although I'd give the edge to Henin-Hardenne. I really don't think it'll be Serena, then again, I was sure she's win Wimbledom, and I was wrong there. I don't think Mauresemo will win--she's fading towards the end of the season, and even though Lindsey is playing well, I don't think she'll do it. Venus--no. Capriati--no. Sharapova will lose in the fourth round or so.
As for the men, probably more wide open than usual. My top three picks are Federer, Roddick, and Hewitt,a nd I'd say Roddick has the edge. He always plays his bets here, and I don't think Hewitt can beat him if he does. I also think Federer is fading a little as the long season wears on, and isn't playing his best now.

Davenport is red hot right now. She is undefeated since Wimbledon, winning four tournaments including beating Serena badly, and Venus twice. Justine is still making her comeback and this is only her second tournament. I look for her to do well and do try her old injury tricks if falling behind but I don't see her winning this. Sharapova (or Shaparova as that one guy kept calling her) is not playing well. Jennifer just doesn't seem to have it consistently enough anymore. Mauresmo doesn't have the consistent mental game to pull off the biggies.
For the men I go with Roddick. He is playing pretty well, winning the US Open series. I think the hard courts give him the best chance of beating Federer. There will not be rain delays like at Wimbledon, and the hard courts allow his second serve to jump up to the skies unlike on grass where it doesn't get the same kick. Federer is not as good here as on grass. You could see last night against Baghdadis he isn't at his peak now. Hewitt is playing well, winning two lead up tournaments but doesn't have the firepower. I see him as capable of possibly beating Roddick or Federer but not both. I don't know which side of the draw his is on to know who he faces first. But if Roddick or Federer were to be upset by someone else, then I could see Hewitt pulling off another US Open.

| 2. I agree--Hewitt could be either Roddick or Federer, but not both... |

...he's close to the both of them, but not quite.
The reason why I picked Henin-Hardenne is because of the way she routed Mauresemo at the Olympics. Amelia is the one person who seemed to have Justine's number, but not anymore. Usually such long lay-offs hurt players quite a bit--doesn't seem to be the case here.
