my stuff crashed earlier tonight
my browser went doolally and 'was not resposive'. my screen was going from DU to black. DU to black. i had to power off with the button, and after ten minutes of dicking around, and signing back on, the first thread in the forums page was the same as it was about 15 minutes earlier. i just got back on a little while ago after disk clean up, defragmenting, system restore, spy botting and adawaring.
so i'm wary about installing something that i've read may be a big huge trouble causing piece of crap. the last time i downloaded a major thinger (ZA Pro 4 to Pro 5) my dll files were lunched and i spent the following 3 days uninstalling and reinstalling the affected programs and drivers...and cursing Zone Alarm.

It also causes problems, random ones with installation and afterwards many settings reset (media player settings, MS Office registration settings, for all I know the product activation settings may reset on their own too.)

The new version of IE with the popup blocker doesn't get along well with AdAware Plus' popup blocker.

So, since IE's works better than AA's I just shut off the latter and no problem with anything.

9. Don't use Zone Alarm 5

ZA has a big memory leak, takes up too much resources. I'm using Kerio for a firewall. You can download it at www.kerio.com and the personal version is free.

I'm running XP SP2 now, so far it seems ok, no problems or anything. I don't really use IE that much, but the popup blocker is ok. About time it was added. Anyway, I use Opera for my web browser, I like it alot. It's free as well, can get it from www.opera.com.

DU had a problem earlier with the database. That's why the page wasn't refreshing properly. It seems fine now.

All sysadmins will say that. We say that to avoid potential issues until we've been able to test updates on every configuration possible so as to make less work for ourselves later.

In a business environment, it's best to thoroughly test updates of this magnitude before allowing them to propogate throughout the company.

I haven't let it be installed anywhere on my network yet, and won't do so for at least another month or two of testing, if not more.

If your system is already unstable, I would not recommend installing it.

If you DO install it, simply create a restore point first using System Restore. SP2 has an uninstall feature built in. You can uninstall SP2 then do the system restore and you'll be back to where you were before.
