| Poll question: Have you ever heard this phrase shouted over late night television? |
|
It's Cal Worthington, and his dog, Spot!
It's part of my memories of growing up.
A thousand points for anyone who can post all the verses of the song.

I think he started these in the late 1960's. Originally it was Worthington Dodge. I'll eat a bug if I can't make a better deal!
The dog stuff was a parody of his rivals Ralph Williams and Carl Patralia. Patralia had a dog to "soothe" you, however he was sent to prison some time later on.

| 16. Had no idea that it was a parody. That's fascinating. |

I knew it had originally been Worthington Dodge. I think my grandmother bought a Dodge Dart Duster from him. That was a horrible car for my grandmother -- the horn was inlaid around the inside of the steering wheel, all the way around, and covered with a thin strip of rubber. One honked by squeezing the wheel. Well, Grandma was a very nervous driver and gripped the wheel like a vise, even if she was the only one on the road.

Cal Worthington is a used-car salesman in Southern California. He's run commercials for at least 35 years. His "dog" spot is always a different animal: bear, elephant, cougar, lion, etc.

Cal have this week?
I remember when he had a rabbit, and I guess the thing must have been a live commercial, because it started kicking and scratching at him and took off.
Very funny.

Good plot idea. Movie stunk to high heaven. Can't remember what it was called.
I'm singing my old song tonight, ET. Everyone on DU is sick of it, I'm sure. I'm h o m e s i c k and I would love to hear Cal Worthington's voice. God, you know you're homesick when you long to hear that man on television trying to sell you a car. :eyes:

1,000,000 points to the first person to complete this radio jingle. (I'll have to trust you if you're convincing, because I don't remember the exact address myself.)
You have to be a Southern Californian of a certain age to get this one.

"Stanley Chevrolet." Am not 100% positive about the street number, but I do know that it's darn close!
I am a native Southern Californian, I am of a "certain age."

Here they are: .......... (etc., to a million)
The problem with that jingle is that once it starts going in your head, it never quits.
I wonder if Stanley Chevrolet still exists? (I haven't lived in L.A. since the early '80s.)

| 17. What a coincidence! I was out last night with his son's ex-wife |
|
Not kidding. She had a lot of scandalous stories to tell. Like one of the times he was a guest on Carson, and brought his "wife" and "son" out with him. The problem was, the "son" was actually his grandson (i.e., my friend's son), and the "wife" was his mistress.
Apparently, he thought that just because it was past his real wife's bedtime, no one else they were acquainted with would be watching the show.
