Ninny here...needs help explaining something

Okay.. I got this "warning" email from my picture-holding place about maybe having to purchase more bandwidth due to traffic.. My question is this.. Why would 168,591 people want to look at my pictures??? If I don't allow linking, then I can't use them either..:(..If I make the galleries private, I'll lose the password for sure :(..

any hints???

1. Is it the server where you store your signature line pics?

I don't know the mechanics of it, but maybe it's because of the unique views of each thread that shows the image files in your signatures on DU, I don't know.

2. Linking causes hits

The 168,591 hits are probably the result of you linking to photos on DU. Everytime someone reads a thread with one of your pics in it, your photo gets a hit.

3. The month before had 192,361 hits, but less BW

Hits: 192361 C. Ratio: ~165% Bytes: 4.18 GB


I guess I just don't get it..:shrug:.

It was just AUGUST that went bonkers..

and the individual galleries "hit" were also ones that I didn't even link any pics from..

I looked all over the site to see if there was a phone number so I could have them explain it to me.. (I really don't understand all this stuff)...but never found one..


I think I pay like $100 a year ...and up til now, I have never even come close to whatever the limit is..

9. MMM..on my web host and site, I'm able to see the past

records of activity as far as used bandwidth..ect.

I'll bet you anything that most (80%..? )of your bandwidth is being used by probably less than 10% of your files.

Have you checked your pictures for file size. I'll bet you have a lot that have not been compressed. (Ulead Smart Saver or similar program)

On edit: I'd get into your site folders and do some SERIOUS cleaning :)

On edit 2: You stated you don't know very much "about this stuff" but your web host should be able to help you figure it out or at the least, have a help section on how things work.

8. i don't know much about this stuff, so maybe this is more of a kick

for your thread, but could someone be swiping bandwidth off you? i mean they find ways to do shit like that, about a minute before shit is invented these days...
