|
It all depends on the mood. I would say though that Back in Black would be a better AC/DC pick than Highway to Hell.

sake. You have some good choices on there. Love "Aqualung" as well; there really are too many to pick a favorite. Beatles, The Who, Aerosmith, STP, Metallica, Janis, Jimi, The Doors, The Police, Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, Neil Young, Dylan, CSN, Joni, The Pretenders, Heart... and of course, the Split Enz, Crowded House, and Neil Finn music is great.

Van Halen II Women And Children First Fair Warning
Four perfect rock n roll albums. And they did 2 more after that that weren't bad either.
First 6 Ac/Dc albums (nothing against Back in Black, but Bon Scott IS Ac/Dc)
Rolling Stones 1968 - 1974 (The Jimmy Miller/Mick Taylor era) Yes the studio albums of this era were superb, but the real magic is in the live bootlegs of the period.
"Get Your Leeds Lungs Out" (1971) and "Brussels Affair" (1973) are two of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Legality be damned.

I just don't believe Eddie Van Halen should have ever touched a synthesizer. Let alone hooked up with a certain Bush supporting tequila peddler. You'll notice I didn't rank "1984" as a perfect album either.

I could never pick one favorite rock album of all time. If forced to, it'd probably be something Beatles, but I'd have trouble narrowing down just from all their great stuff.
Out of your list, I gave a vote to Aqualung 'cause I actually think it's a bit underrated since the critics hate Tull so much. Who's Next and Dark Side of the Moon are definitely up there, too.

| 23. I adore Zep's "PG" as much as the next sane creature with ears, BUT... |
|
....PG was not an inherently cohesive work of rock majesty, as it included tracks going back to 1970, and as such was kind of a mish-mosh of Zeppelin up to that point (1975). No, best album would have to be Zep IV, and I could bore you all with a track-by-track jerk-off, but I won't. I'll just say that the album cooks frm beginning (Black Dog) to the end (When the Levee Breaks). In between (at the end of Side One for those old enough to remeber vinyl) is a little track called "Stairway To Heaven." And I don' t give a tinker's curse how many times this song has been put down----it is and remains a GREAT freakin' rock anthem.
PS--Jimmy Page's production work on this album is spellbinding, tight, and the essential goddamn definition of rock.
#2?--- "Who's Next." Townshend pulls from the furnace the glowing, twisted embers of the "Life House" project and fashions a masterpiece. What balls.

|
...about a man who knows his shit. Sure, I'll buy that. "Houses" and "III" are great and I'd probably take either one to a desert island before I took "IV." Then again, I'd probably take "Presence." What does this mean? That I'm a raving looney? I guess. Zep rules.
But you're talking to a man who believes that "Rock of the Westies" beats "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" hands down.
And I feel like a bullet in the gun of Robert Ford.

|
before or since has had anything near the impact this one had.Almost forty years later and it's still fresh. When it first came out its influence was a seismic shift in rock and it's still being felt even today.
When I first heard it I thought it was the most godawful noise I'd ever heard. It was,to say the least, original.I did recognize it for genius shortly thereafter, though.
Hendrix's short three years on the scene was the most brilliant burst of creativity the rock world will probably ever see.I suppose someone could come along and eclipse it,but I doubt they'd take odds in Vegas on it happening.

I love the Ramones, but best rock album of all time? Not sure I agree. It's Rocket to Russia, dude. ;)
Seriously it should be:
Folk/ rock era: Highway 61, Blood On the Tracks or the Basement Tapes by Dylan. Or Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys.
From the punk era, probably Remain In Light by Talking Heads or something else produced by Brian Eno. Maybe London Calling or the first Pretenders album. JMO

You asked "Best rock album of all time".
Granted, rock is a very broad and loose genre to define. I'm no big fan of the Beatles, but I guess they are definable as rock... just not my definition (sort of like the definition of porn... "I know it when I see it"). B-)
FWIW, I almost picked the Ramones also, but my choice would have been "Ramones Alive". Their studio albums don't do them justice.

... "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy".
Or maybe Gang of Four's "Entertainment".
Or perhaps The Stranglers' "The Raven".
Or could it be David Bowie's "Low".
Or The Wolfgang Press's "Queer".
What about King Crimson's "Red".
But it might be Stereolab's "Mars Audiac Quintet".
Or even My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless".

Will I have to declare it as income?
But seriously, that album was the cleanest, best produced Live Album I've ever heard. The technical recording remains the standard by which I measure all live music. And what music it was-
1 Bertha 5:42 Garcia / Hunter 2 Mama Tried 2:44 Merle Haggard 3 Big Railroad Blues 3:36 Noah Lewis arr. Grateful Dead 4 Playing in the Band 4:40 Weir / Hart / Hunter 5 The Other One 18:05 Weir / Kreutzmann 6 Me & My Uncle 3:04 John Phillips 7 Big Boss Man 5:14 Smith / Dixon 8 Me & Bobby McGee 5:42 Kristofferson / Foster 9 Johnny B. Goode 3:44 Chuck Berry 10 Wharf Rat 8:30 Garcia / Hunter 11 Not Fade Away > Petty / Hardin Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad 9:12 Traditional arr. Grateful Dead
I think it captured the Dead at the very best,,,,everything just clicked on this album.
Understandingably, I'm partial to "Big Boss Man" :-), but the kicker was "NFA/GDTRFB"....the greatest rock and Roll tune of all time, IMHO.

were the "fathers of heavy metal" or some such shit... but even on their best day, they couldn't come anywhere close to Hole in the Sky... to this day, one of the heaviest riffs of all time... (actually, since my band uses the same tuning-C#-I usually play that riff for soundcheck...)

| 80. Gottsta be "Dark Side of the Moon" or... |
|
"Wish You Were Here". I used to have one of the special release albums with the Dark Side of the Moon logo cast in the vinyl of the album. It would prolly be worth a mint today.
