Are You Impressed When Weather Reporters Stand IN THE HURRICANE Winds
... just to show you how strong and forceful they are?

Does it matter to you whether or not the "on-the-spot" weather reporters are actually standing outside in the snow to show us exactly how cold it is (or how deep the snow is)?

-- Allen

I'M STANDING OUTSIDE ON THE BOARDWALK... AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THE WIND IS REALLY BLOWING AND KICKING UP SPRAY AND FOAM OFF OF THE WAVES. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN HEAR ME OR IF OUR CAMERA MAN CAN GET A SHOT OF THIS BUT YOU CAN SEE HOW THE PIER IS ABOUT TO FALL APART. HERE... LET'S WALK OUT ON THE PIER SO WE CAN GET A BETTER SHOT OF THIS. WOW! LOOK HOW THE WAVES ARE SMASHING UP AND OVER THE SEA WALL! THE GOVERNOR HAS DECLARED A MANDATORY EVACUATION OF THIS LOW-LYING AREA BECAUSE OF THE 10-FOOT STORM SURGE THAT... AS YOU CAN SEE... IS NOW UP TO MY WAIST! BACK TO YOU IN THE STUDIO!!

2. Not at all
I think pandering for ratings is pathetic. We have plenty of technology to view bad weather remotely, with voice overs from a safe distance. It's reckless, stupid and obvious.

12. some here had asked when one of them
would be hit by a branch. The next day one of them was on reporting and had a big patch over his eye. Actually I kinda like to see them out there flying around the state of Florida. I cracks me up, especially those little 90 pound girls. I think they do it cuz they are proud of their job and proud to go beyond the call of duty. I'd probably do the same thing, but I'm not too bright either.

5. They're a bunch of idiots for standing out in the storm...
I even think this about the ones that I respect.

7. the funniest one was on MSNBC....
They were broadcasting from a local affiliate-

the inside reporter goes "I'm really worried about you, get yourself inside!"...

then proceeds to asking her about 6 more questions.

9. That is "Reporter Abuse"

for them to make those people do that stuff!

And for what! A smart station would put some kind of robot in that area and let us see what happens to it.

8. Me? No.
But many people get all wrapped up in it when the reporting is live from some semi-dangerous spot. Like outside the studio when it snows.

This isn't a professional decision made by meteorologists, it's a directive from programming.

Excitement sells; even phony excitement.

10. The Weather Channel has been sending its reporters to Florida
risking their lives for stupid shots. I kind of think it's immoral. They were particularly proud of a shot in which one of their reporters almost was smacked by debris.

One thing one never hears on "The Weather Channel," is "Global Climate Change." The station must be owned by Republicans since they don't dare mention the obvious.

13. Well, journalism can be dangerous.
Sometimes you can see the dangers. Those photos you see of battle and missiles and firebombs in the Middle East -- that is no cakewalk to get that stuff, folks. One of the American journalists in Iraq reported on Bill Moyers that to even carry a US ID on you as a journalist can be a death sentence, and he said, "I do not say that lightly."

US forces have killed journalists there and have fired missiles into the hotel known to house many of the journalists.

Back in this hemisphere, more than one journalist reporting on drug trade and the many murders on the US/Mexico border has been mysteriously killed.

I think the assignment to go stand in the howling wind and rain is kind of silly. It's visible danger and discomfort, and you can see why the producers do it.

But, the real dangers for journalists are not generally so visual or so obvious. Mother Nature is one thing; violent greedy humans are another.

14. We actually have very few JOURNALIST'S left in this country.
I actually can't remember the last time I saw one, actually. We have Government mouthpieces, but very few journalists.

22. Here is a new thread on exactly HOW dangerous.
Dead journalist found in Mexico.

Journalist poisoned, journalist jailed in Russia, apparently to prevent them from reporting on the school siege.

15. Eh
you know what REALLY impresses me? When we get ice or snow here in Texas. Some reporter goes out and gives a report from out in the ice and snow and tells us how cold it is.

Sometimes they even take the microphone down to the ground and hit the ice with their other hand so we can HEAR how hard it is.

Then they remind us how cold it is. If the wind is blowing, they tell us it is windy. If there is still sleet or snow falling, they are sure to tell us it is still snowing/sleeting.

I find that SO impressive.

/sarcasm off

Texans and ice/snow....an idiotic combination.

16. Texans and ice/snow
Moonbeam, you just made me chuckle. Years ago, in 1966 my second cousin and her husband were transferred from Chicago to Dallas in the early fall. They came back for a visit the following summer and told everyone in the family hilarious stories about Texas drivers in an ice storm. We still laugh about it to this day.

I know what you mean about reporters and the weather. Every year here in Chicago when the first real snowfall hits they are absolutely pathetic.

My favorite though is when the temperature falls below zero and the wind chill is about -50 and here are our intrepid reporters standing on an overpass over the Kennedy or the Dan Ryan Expressways telling everyone to stay inside.

17. No kidding!
Texans and ice/snow is a horrible combination!

I remember one year, watching the local news, during one of these such events. They had a reporter standing on a bridge overpass and probably 20 cars all wrecked in a heap below........Ugggg! Texans just cannot drive in ice/snow PERIOD! I should know....I am one of 'em!

21. I like it when the reporter is standing up to their knees in water
talking about the horrible flooding, and in the background you can see people standing on dry ground only a few feet away! It's as if every time it rains, the news directors tell their star reporters to go find a puddle to jump into for ratings/sensationalism.
