I always cramp up if I go running w/out stretching; I honestly don't get it..

warming up is essential in REDUCTION of injuries.... but injuries are gonna happen
cool down stretches will help with soreness the next day and are equally as important.

or the "traditional" kind of stretching. It really makes sense if you think about it. Why would you think that stationary stretching would help you prepare for heavy intense movement. The proper way to prepare for activity is to warm up in a way that is relevant to your sport. Static stretching is best when you do it after activities.
