Yes, I really didn't get it. This friend is in her thirties and my observation has been that many of that generation (Gen X, to use the media term) just automatically react against the preceding generation (Liberals, Hippies, counterculture) without giving it a lot of thought. She has always proudly voted Repub without watching the news or reading newspapers or otherwise informing herself about current events.

I am frightened by what a casual, ego-based choice she makes when she votes. The cowboy comment was very disturbing to me, considering what is at stake.

Hmmm my teachers did not teach that this incident was a big win in school--I was taught that it was at best a standoff. I think the end result got a lot of criticism some people were not thrilled to have soviet warheads in Cuba (pretty dammed close!) pointed at the US. But hey I can see how you may feel that was a big win (also the Turkey stuff--not good for US). For example if a person was a Stalinist sympathizer, I guess that they would consider it a big win. I personally consider it a stalemate at the very best. But we lost more than we won once again just my opinion. You may enjoy the audio tapes and notes from Kennedy's conversations at that time, that is where most of my knowledge came from.

Once she decided she loved them, there was nothing they could do to turn her away. It is more important that her first impression (shit shoveled by a rah-rah magazine article, no less!) be confirmed at every turn, rather than the truth be evaluated in order to elect the most suitable person.

There are a lot of people like her out there. Now, I'm not a big reader of mainstream women's magazines or general interest magazines like People, Good Housekeeping, etc., and I don't watch such stuff on TV, but did Kerry's campaign make sure glowing articles about the Kerry family appeared in all the major magazines? If not, then they failed to reach women like the one I described.
