Why do Freeper types have a problem with Oprah?
Someone on other board where I post occasionally called Oprah a racist and got a few nods of agreement. When someone else asked what she's done or said that's racist, no one came up with anything. I'm not a regular viewer, but have never heard her say anything remotely racist. What are they griping about now?

10. You forgot one, she is also incredibly successful, and didn't have
to use her daddy's influence to get her there. Aren't all RWers intimidated by successful women. Their mantra is barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, and no back talk!!!

Why do you think they went after Martha Stewart for a $38,000 profit on a stock deal?

7. Once I saw her show and she said she didn't see
how any white person raised in American could avoid being racist. Of course she was alluding to the fact that the culture itself teaches racism and we can't help but absorb it to some degree. I don't have a problem with that assertion, but I can see how hypersensitive white-power types would.

11. I have a problem with Oprah.
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 04:14 PM by UdoKier
She is worth a billion dollars and has a platform to influence people, but I've never heard of her denouncing the unspeakable atrocities Bush has committed.

Oh no, a billion isn't enough. Wouldn't want to alienate a percentage of the viewers.

I don't expect her to be a strident liberal, but a comment now and then would be great.

Same with Rosie - she stayed fairly apolitical, until Bill got a girlfriend, then she trashed him for lying about it - all the while SHE was lying to her dull-witted middle-Amercian fans that she "had a crush on Tom Cruise" and wasn't a lesbian.

Jerry Springer may have a scumbag show, but at least he's a democrat...

13. Well, that's for ratings...
Oprah and Rosie (when she was on) are/were pandering to mostly white, upper-middle-class to rich SAHM types. If they were to view their true politics, the Ladies Who Lunch and the Junior League set would get their panties in a wad.

Like Rosie, Oprah won't put her money to use for political purposes until after she hangs up the mike. I guess the days of talk show hosts with guts like Phil Donahue are a thing of the past. *sigh*

14. She's a woman, she's black, and she is more successful and
more rich than they will EVER be, combined. It's that simple.

Just as I have a problem with all self-aggrandizing cultural kommissars (apart from Screaming Lord Byron, that is). She makes gazillions of dollars appearing to assuage the neuroses of her viewers while simultaneously stoking them. She's in the status anxiety business. And in my book, that's evil -- no different than the cosmetics or fashion industries.

16. I'm not big on Oprah the talk-show hostess...
I don't care for her style, her way of drawing words out when she gets excited, which is always except for when she's crying. I don't care for the fact that she gave Dr. Phil his start. Fine, she gave away the cars -- but it was as much a publicity stunt for her and Pontiac as it was an act of charity; there's nothing wrong with publicity stunts (um, hello, I post my own version every few days) but don't pretend they're something they're not. The books she selected for her book club weren't really my thing, but that's neither here nor there.

That said...I have no problem with Oprah the successful black female, which is the actual problem the people you mention have. I also don't object to Oprah not being a good Democratic spokeswoman, which is an objection some DUers have -- if she's chosen not to do so, that's her right. She has Arnie on but she's had plenty of Dems on, too.

17. A non freeper co-worker said the same thing
that she did not like Oprah because she considered her to be very racist. We didn't have time to get into why but I wonder where this feeling comes from. I don't think you can totally blame it on the fact that she is black and very rich.
