| Party Protocol with Repukes (I think I was BAD...) |
|
Last night we went to a "farewell" party for a couple who are being transferred to Europe. They were the hosts, and the attendees were a mixed bag of work friends, social friends and relatives. Apparently this family likes to "argue loudly" over politics, and two of the brothers of the host got into LOUD arguments with two uncle/aunt combinations to the point where the spouses of the "Wrong Way" followers were chanting "not the time or the place let's leave" while their nephews yelled at them over the stupidity of their positions.
To be honest, it was kind of fun. I joined in on the second set (NOT YELLING), and "helped" the aunt realize the consequences of outlawing abortion and categorizing it as "murder" means jailing 43 million women (she was okay with that), and then tried to provide her with a (non-partisan) helpful website for Catholic voters (www.votingcatholic.org) which info she rejected with all of her being. ("I don't want ANYTHING from you!") Of course, now I'm kicking myself because this would have been the perfect opportunity to say something clever like "I can see you are a TRUE Bush supporter -- never letting new information or reality interfere with your opinions!" but I guess I'll save it for later.
I was wearing one of my "Kerry: Bringing complete sentences back to the White House" buttons, and I ended up giving it to the primary instigating nephew. (He also chipped in $20 for my "bumper sticker" campaign!) Later, as other guests were talking about the situation, I made the happy "we are not the wimpy democrats of old" comment directly aimed at the other * supporter -- she's a staffer on a local campaign, and we got into a mild civil disagreement about impeachment before we ignored each other (most politely) for the rest of the evening.
All in all, it was a great party. I gleefully spread political gossip (labeling it as such) about * "swinging both ways" and "pre-senile dementia" or suffering from the effects of his party boy days and drinking again. People were SHOCKED I tell you, SHOCKED!!!
Part of me wonders, tho, if maybe I should have been "more polite" about my viewpoints. Maybe I should have tried to calm the firefight between nephew and aunt instead of enjoying?

with shots of tequila.
Given the context, your behavior was perfectly appropriate.

People try to avoid confrontation, so they avoid politics. I think it's great that this family isn't afraid to heatedly discuss their differences without it descending into a fist fight, which is quite an accomplishment for any family regarding any kind of heated discussion.
I suppose it must have been refreshing for you because let's face it, probably the majority of people don't seem to care enough about their own government (which is supposed to be THEM) to even think about the important issues facing all Americans today, nevermind discuss it, or more apt, air it out like this family.
